"Forest and Bird today announced that the winner of its New Zealand Bird of the Year 2005 poll is the tui. Forest and Bird would like to thank everyone who voted in the inaugural Bird of the Year poll,” said Forest and Bird Conservation Manager, Kevin Hackwell. “The response has been very encouraging with 76 native bird species receiving nearly 900 votes between them.” Admin: Maybe because the Kakariki is not even known exist to most NZers or we didn't vote hard enough More Info: NZ Forest and Bird Update: Forest and Bird kindly forwarded to us where Kakariki rated "Kakariki came 16th out of the 76 species which were nominated by the public." Not a bad result considering Kakariki are basically unknown. The Tui is certainly a beautiful and most deserving bird, that we have in our gardens most days.
