hey evry one me again Wink

kiwi is on her own in a cage at the moment but am considering getting her a mate.
was wondering how you go about introducing them? she si a bit of a madam with the budgie when theyre out together and they live in cages next to each other, he sits there all day singing to her Wink

we are building the aviary this summer so would have loads more room for them aswell.
just wondering how people go about introducing new birds?
kiwi is 2 years old and as far as i know was only with other birds in the petshop at 18months old. she seemed to just ignore them (they were a group of cockateils.

any advice appreciated as we have kakriki fever Laughing <v>
thanks

I’d be interested as well. I'm getting 3 more GC Conures next week to go with the 3 I already have. I'm planning on putting them into a new aviary as I've heard that the ones currently settled will defend this area but if they all go into a new flight they will be to busy checking things out to worry about the new guys. Just as a side note I keep a lot of fish and when adding new stock to a tank it is sometimes a good idea to move things around so the current stock as well as the new additions have to steak out new territory claims all at the same time. Kakas are another NZ Parrot about the same size as a Kea but where as the Kea is a Mountain Parrot the Kaka is a Forest Parrot so may be Riki's would be a better short name.

Yes same principle applies...
New birds in new avaiary normally sort themselves out over a couple days
If u have and estabished flock say 5 birds, dont add 1 or 2 birds, add at least 3...if have 10, add 5...and change stuff around.
By far the best method is add all birds at the same time to a new flight.
Kakariki being a social bird, one can very often getaway with adding 1 or 2, this depends on the donimance of the top dog, and if the new birds are more submissive.
Keep an eye on things..stress, it is very rare adding new kakariki to a flock, actual attacking or damage takes place.

Often, like hens, adding birds at dusk also helps.
