u can post pics up to 800x resolution, the upload automatically resizes the thumb nail in the post....Pics uploaded over this size tend to hang as the server processes the resize.
We can then clk the thumb in the post for a better veiw.
U can edit the above posts and re submitt pics.

It is now time to keep an eye on things, the mother will be getting ready to lay the next batch, as the wing feather appear....she may or not may the fact the chick is in the nest and get a little agressive....our hens dont mind.

U may wish to start thinking about a 2nd nest box.

U may also like to mark the eggs in there with a marker, a small dot, so u know what egg is what if Mum lays again.

Using a small plastic kitchen funnel, and a strong penlight torch..
Plave the egg in the funnel in a dark room, and shine the torch up the funnel...u will then be able to see if the eggs where fertile.
Do Not do this more than once to good eggs, u could damage the egg.
Only do it after the 2 or 3rd week from laying.

This is a good thread to illustrate to others different stages of progress.
Keep the pics/questions coming at each stage

Steps.

I have a pair that gatch eggs every 7 weeks, If I remove 1 box , she reuses that....I have a similar problem.

The only solns are
1/Remove one parent, and hope the other keeps feeding the current chicks.
2/ Separate parents, remove box and hand feed the chicks.
3/ Supply condoms, but they tend to chew holes in them Shocked
4/ have a chat to Family Planning Think
5/ Build that Avairy u arent allowed to build wall
5/Removing eggs, she will re lay....then by the time the next eggs are ready to lay, your chick will be out of the nest, remove the box. Going from an early post of yours, I would not be supprised if she then laid in the bottom of the cage.
6/ Most of us who breed , I believe started out with a similar problem and got addicted to our parrots/breeding. The only difference is we did not see it as a problem, but a progression and start of a very rewarding hobby. Wink
7/ Take up Fencing instead swordfight (a 'dig' at another member here signlol)
8/ Another member may have a better sol'n. thumb

Progressing to avairy is very rewarding, places a new concept on your relationship to your birds, more of a co habition rather than a house pet relationship.

I am currently building a new avairy, 3.6x 2.6mx 2m H based on the one in another post, with improvements to envioroment, layout, and ease of maintainance.
I will be posting construction details later... type materials and quantities etc.

hmmmmmm, an avary really isnt going to happen, simply because it isnt practical, nor do we have the space. Sad
i would even give them to another bird if i knew of a foster mum! my friend has budgies, and one mother cant succesfully lay fertile eggs so he swaps them with another hens eggs!
im a little perplexed. i dont want to dispose of eggs, but at the same time she needs a break as she is like a christmas turkey! plucked!
i love my birds to bits, but looking at tthem it looks like i bit off more than i can chew. i always liked the idea of chicks, but as my partner and me work full time, hand rearing would be impossible. would it be cruel just to remove eggs?

We are fortunate to have quite a few pairs so when I want to give a pair a brest, I put a couple of eggs under other hens that don't have a lot of eggs. I then separate the male a female for about two to three months.

I think you will have to throw away some eggs and separate the parents as she will lay on the floor of the cage. The only way to keep them together and stop her laying is to put them in a supsended cage / aviary (has no floor, only a wire bottom).

Maybe you can find a kakariki breeder nearby that will take over the eggs for you?

U may find someone with Red Rumps, they make good foster parents, even with parrots much larger than themselves!!
Check back thru the forums there are some posts about other good foster parents to.

I have used Red Rumps to foster Golden Mantles from egg to weaning without any problem. I do recall reading somewhere that Red Rumps will rear Kakariki chicks from egg until 7 - 10 days old and then stop feeding as apparently Kakariki babies start to behave very differently from baby red rumps and this scares / puts the red rumps off. I have not yet tried / needed to try kakariki eggs / babies with red rumps so have no personal experience. Kakariki are excellent fosters for their own kind.
