Hi Guys doe's anyone have any tips in reguards to stopping a hen bird plucking the babies. Thay are only about 2 weeks old and she has started at them already. They are a bit young to take out the hen so it looks like i will be hand raising them. This happened last nest but she didn't start till they were about 4 weeks old. Cheers Kevin

wall hey kev I had the same problem but with a cock bird he was just plucking at first but by the 3rd nest he was killing the young. I have been told by other breeders they some sometime stop but most of the time just keep doing it. I sopped breeding with my bird that was doing it and have only just paired him up with another bird to see how he goes. good luck

I remember this subject comng up a couple yrs ago..
We have never had any issues, so all I can do is make suggestions

What about surrogate parents...moving chicks into another nest?
Or having this pair lay eggs then move to surogate parents

We suppled 1/2 doz pairs of reds to DoC a while back for the orange crown recovery program to be used as surrogate parents

And back before kakariki where as popular, they used to be used as surrogates for many species...even larger parrots like kings and crimsons.

Cats I know you are experanced...you do have a 2nd nesting box in the flight? Our experiance is the female want to go to nest just as the adult feathers start to appear on chicks...sometimes the female is ok, and will lay fine in the same box, other times she will damage the chicks....if there is not another spare box...

Hi Tossi and Steps i do have other pairs but most of them have babies of there own and the problem is they are much older or much younger. The problem is this hen bird is a black eyed clear and the young are all yellow. I already have a 4th smaller baby under another pair. The last time she had eggs i moved them before they hatch and the foster mum dumped them all at a week old. I think the previous owner knew she did this and thats why a good deal sometimes have hickups. Cheers Kev
