100 Plus yr Kakariki ! - Yep thought that would get attention... We where out for a 'Sunday Drive' and came across the Putaruru Timber Museum The web site doesnt do it justice.. Anyway in one of the restored historical buildings there the Acclimatisation Soociety has a great display of (taxidermy)Stuffed NZ and introduced birds. Many of which where stuffed by a local well reknown person in the late 1800s..cant remeber her name. There where serveral red crown and yellow crwn kakariki, male, female..the 1st time I have every seen kakariki stuffed...let alone over 100 yrs old They here in very good condition thu the colours had faded a little. These it would be reasonably safe to assume to be orginal pure wilds... no mutation or hybridiation. So comparison with capitive birds that have had no introduction of new wild blood formany decades was interesting Things I noted: 1/Allowing for fading of colour they where identical to our birds. 2/Suprisingly They where a little smaller...almost as big as our small birds. Whether is is because of diet, lack of wild excersise, selective breeding or some other factor in our capitive bird, would be hard to establish We didnt have the camera, and even if we did, they are behind glass which messes up photos unles one has poloriod lens. The museum is well worth the stop, and the food is real good old fashisoned cooking

I have a yellow fronted cinnamon hen who is around 2-3 years of age. After looking at some of the photos in the gallery I am worried that she is not a true yellow fronted bird? The yellow is not real bright and has small red marks going through it. I am just concerned from a breeding point of view, will this cause problems?? At first I thought she was just going through a molt and wasn't too concerned but my other hen has a much brighter yellow with no signs of red.
