Hi,
My kak layed 4 eggs about 21 days ago. One she ate. Now...i just peeped into the nest box and one is dented in a few places because the egg shell is so soft. It was never like this before and the other 2 are ok. What could be the matter? Is it infertile?
Ok. It doesnt look like the other 2 are going to hatch...its been 29 days since the last egg was laid. I dont have a candling light...ive never bred Kakarikis before. I will make sure to get one for next time!
By the way, my male is only around 7 months old, is he too young to mate, hence the infertile eggs? I got the female from a breeder because my male was trying to rub on my hand all the time and was biting...so i thought it was time to get him a girlfriend!
If the other 2 eggs dont hatch, how long should i leave them there before I take them away? The female is sitting on them all the time still so i dont want to hurt her feelings!

Wait for the female to bury or abandon the eggs..occassionaly one may hatch even after this time.
If you get one of those little torches that have a bright bulb and a focus adjustment...they have 2 AA batteries..maket a circle with your index finger and thumb, place the egg on the cicle, then the torch in the plalm facing up, in a dark room..you have a candling light suitable for small birds.
larger birds have thicker shells and need brighter lights
Only candle a egg once and breif as possible, and only if neccessary..the heat and light can cause damage to the egg.

Yes a very good possibity, thu nothing is lost, you have an established pair, and if the male is feeding the female in the nest, know they have a could chance of being great parents.
In the wild the older dominate males score the nesting holes and the females the younger males miss out.

Thanks for the advice! I was wondering about the calcuim in Rose's diet. She started mating with my Charlie within 2 weeks of bringing her home so perhaps her diet hasnt been too great.
Im a bit disapointed about the eggs but i suppose i should look on the bright side, they have proven themselves to be very commited parents!
Charlie feeds Rose all the time and spends a lot of time talking to her in the nest box (he speaks English instead of Kakariki...i hear, "come on Charlie, hello, Mr Charlieeeeee' in a soft little voice), hehe.

Its been around 33 days since Rose started sitting on the eggs so its obvious they're not gonna hatch. However, although she leaving the nest box a lot more and even coming out the cage to play, shes sitting on the eggs still. Also, they started mating again. Should I take the old eggs away now? I dont want her to lay another egg and not know which is the old and which is the new.
Once she starts to leave the eggs during the day remove them

the female uncubates the eggs for between 19 and 21 days.the hen normally lays on every second day and starts to incubate when the 4th egg is laid.for the first 14 days the male and female will feed the chicks(mainly male feeds female and she feeds the babys)generally around the 14th day the female will leave the nest .after 14 days the male will feeed thechicks.

take it away its not firtile ,gas from bad eggs can effect the others,leave the whole eggs that are looking ok .have you candled them??
