Can someone please help me out with information on what colours of Kakariki's are "hybrids"?

I have been told that the yellow fronted are "hybrids" yet all the information I have found on the net proves otherwise?

I have not been able to find any information on the cinnamon Kaks, though I would think this surely is a hybrid?

There are 2 common species, red fronted and yellow fronted. 1very rare, the yellow fronted. Hybrids are crossings of species eg red fronted male with yellow fronted female. This has been done in the past to sell them as the rare (and expensive) Yellow fronted. This is generally regarded as a big no no!! Shame on you
Mutations are pieds, cinamons, etc. Nothing wrong with that, some people like myself, really like those. Have a look at photo galleries to see examples of those.

Thanks for the information, much appreciated!!

So basically we shouldn't be breeding a yellow and a red fronted together? Rather two yellow fronted or two red fronted?

What is the reason with this, does it do something to the genetics??

Sorry for all the questions but I have 3 pairs (one a yellow to a red fronted) and I just want to make sure that breeding them won't cause any problems down the track.

If you know of a good website that I can find this information please let me know.

Just another question: I have two red fronted normal green birds (male and female) and both have what looks like a white patch of feathers to the back of the neck??? Any ideas as to why they have this???

No...this patch is noticable on chicks in the nest then as the adualt feathers devaple they grow over the patch so its sort of hidden underneath.
Why its there?, no idea.

This site is going to be your best chance of getting answers regarding Kakariki, the forum searchs will open up many answers...but maybe a few questions too Shocked .

I too wondered about the white spot on the back of the neck Think , I'm sure there's a sound reason, my uninformed guess is perhaps a defense mechanism to trick a predator to thinking that chicks in a nest are just lumps of droppings?, duno .

So this white patch does it only occur in the normal green Kakariki's? I have had cinnamon babies previously and have never seen this type of marking?

After checking the dates on when I bought this hen she would have to be pretty close to 12 months I would think. So how long would it be before this white mark goes away?

Could the white spots indicate they are split to pied? Although splits do not have the yellow/white colouring, I have read they can have a small mark in the neck. Think You know anything about their parents?

To my knowledge they aren't pied but I might contact the breeder I got the two birds off to see what I can find out. At first I thought it was just because the birds were young but it doesn't seem to be going away, if anything the patch on the female is getting whiter and more prominent than the one on her brother.

If I do find out that some how the birds are pied would this be a problem for breeding as I have this red fronted hen paired with a red fronted male, they have 6 eggs (and counting) at the moment.

No problems. Your birds might be split to pied and not (visual) pied. They may carry the gene. If they are both split you will/might get normals, split and pied birds. There is a lot of info on mutations on the www. Google it up, took me a few days to get some clearity in the matter, but it is not too difficult. Like Steptoe mentioned, there is a lot of specific kaki info on this website. Keep us informed. Laughing

Hi Bertman and Steptoe. Just wanted to give you an update on my two possible pied Kaks.

I have been unable to get in contact with my breeder but I have had something quite unbelievable happen with the cock bird!

He has started to get red feathers coming through the green all over his body!!! On the left underside he has this huge pale red feathering that has started to come through and is quite a large patch.

I just totally can't believe the look of him, I kid you not, these red feathers are popping up all over his body!

Tomorrow I will see if I can get this little guy to stand still long enough so that I can get a few good photos to show you, you wouldn't believe it unless you got to see it!

So tell me, have you ever heard of something like this happening because I am totally blown away.

Ok see some photos below of my little guy, he is looking a little bald at the moment because a hen pulled out some of his head feathers.

I haven't posted photos on this site before so hopefully this works!

Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

The first pic shows a front on view of my little guy with a few red feathers coming through the green on his chest.

The second photo is a good view of the pale red colouring around his left leg.

I have a few more photos if you guys need them.

He is a little scruffy around his head as one of my hens decided to pluck some of his head feathers.

Thanks
