Hi
I have some mottled pieds and notices that in the last clutch 2 of the babies have a few red feathers next to their lower beak.
does anyone know anything about this?
i noticed some previous posts indicate that red feathers can be a sign of ill health, i dont think this is the case in the situation - it doesn't appear to be discolouration, The feather are vibrant red just like on the crown.
i'd also like some information on cinnamons in australia. all of the cinnamons I have seen were a light green / olive colour, however i have recently purchased a new cinnamon hen who is alot darker than other cinnamons i have seen, i guess i could describe the colour as a darker browny green.
is this some other type of mutation?
It is not unusual to see some red feathering on the cheek area. Mostly it is accompanied by red colouring in the tail and red feathers on the anus and socks. I've noticed that it always happens in pieds. Pied mutations have the ability to increase red and yellow pigments. Exhibitioners use this ability to improve their Lutino's.
So, probably the pied mutation(s) have something to do with.
Cinnamons......For some reason they are photosensitive. It means when they are exposed to the sun (UV radiation) they become bleached. Thats why young Cinnamon birds are of a dark brownish green.
During moult, when new feathers appear, their bodycolour looks stained.
For this reason, exhibitioners keep them away from the sun.
