Hi all, I hope someone could give me some advice, please. I have three pet kakarikis, all of whom are rescue birds. The two males, Gerard and Francis, are permanently out of their cages. I kept them apart, in separate rooms however Gerard has now figured out a way to get into Francis' room and has taken over his cage. Francis has gone into hiding and won't come out.

I am concerned about the territorial instincts of kakariki and I'm worried that Gerard will take over Francis' cage permanently thereby leaving poor Francis evicted, or worse that Gerard would attack Francis.

Could anyone advise me as to a useful means of persuading them to get along in the same room or at least how to persuade Gerard out of Francis' cage and persuade Francis out of hiding.

Thanks
Pavs

Hi Steptoe, thank you for replying. The female came to me in a very bad condition, feather loss, mites, etc. and is still recovering hence she has to be kept separate from the two males. When she recovers she will be moving on to a new home anyway.

She has been successfully treated with Ivermectin which I learned about through this site.

Since my previous post Francis has resurfaced and appears to be ruefully accepting of Gerard's presence. I would like your opinion as to whether it would be advisable to keep the two males together nonetheless. Gerard is a larger, stronger bird than Francis and would certainly be the victor should it come to open combat. Pray

Do you think I should separate them immediately or leave them together a while longer to enable them to negotiate terms of residence?

Kind regards

Adding a new kakariki to a flock in a flight causes a bit of intimdiation till the pecking order is sorted out, mainly at roosting time. thats normal with most animals.
In captivity it is good practice putting, 2 or more who dont know each other, into an envioroment that is new to both, then let them sort pecking order
I would suggest to change the look location of the cages, put them into a room, to fly around and let them sort where they want to go.
