i have 3 kakarikis i male 2 female they all get along fairly well but lately the one female has started to pull the feathers out of my other female and starts to eat the quill i have no idea why she would do this anyone got any ideas thanks.
Kakariki's tend to taste almost everything to find out if it is edible. Also tailfeathers. But I dont think they swallow it. Feathers are indigestable, just like human hair.
Regarding pulling feathers, I've only seen this with chicks beeing plucked by the hen. Between adults it happens, but only one feather.
Was there any agression involved?
hi peter thanks for your reply no there has been no aggression between these two, i have had them over 3 years both females because they were not a true pair they fed each other and tried to mate they still feed each other but beauty who is doing the plucking now mates with the male but she still trys to mate with tatters (who is the one with the feathers being plucked) thing is she is quite sly with it as soon as tatters back is turned beauty takes a beak full anything from 3-5 tatters screams big time its got to hurt, its not all the time just now and again really odd, if you have any more info let me know it would be appreciated thanks.
