Hello everyone,

Yesterday we just bought a young kakariki for the first time. He is 3,5 weeks old. We are a little bit worried if he's healty. Maybe you could help us.

He yawns a lot and he doesn't drink a lot. He's eating just fine. He pulls really hard on his feathers. The man we bought him from did cut his feathers of. Could it be that he pulls his feathers because of that?

He likes to be held on the hand, but he isn't very active. Is it because he is so young and needs to get used to his new home?

We try to help him drink from a spoon. Then he drinks a little bit. But we think not enough. He won't drink by himself.

Do you think that there is something wrong with him?

And are there things we should know about having a young kakariki as a pet?

Maybe about feeding them or about the temperature in the room?
Just anything that we need to know.

Thank you!

3 and a half weeks old? That's way too young to sell one! Still needs to be handraised. I think they fledge about 8 weeks old or so.

Sry havnt replied earlier, been away and busy building new avaiaries
As Karen says, in some counties it is illegal to sell birds /pets to early.

We dont remove kakariki from parents till about 2 weeks after they leave the nest.

Hi,

As the other members say, 3,5 weeks old is far too soon to sell a kakariki or separate one from the parents.

At 3,5 weeks kakarikis are still fed by the parents, are not independent, and if as in this case are removed from the parents, in order to survive must absolutely be handfed with some handfeeding formula.
I believe he "yawns a lot" simply because he is asking to be fed either by his parents, or handfed by you.
Are you handfeeding him or just giving him adult food (seeds or whatever) ?

(Mine are now 2 months old and at least one of them is still often fed by his father, even thought they all already eat by themselves)

As far as I know (based on my own experience and observation), while they are not independent, most birds don't drink any whater at all.
I believe the little bit yours drink is because he expects to get some food.
