I have 2 kakarikis. A hen, 4 years old, & a cock 2 years old. Due to new working commitments & long periods away from home coming up in the near future I have had to make a decision about my kaks. The birds have separate cages & these would be included with the birds. I don't want any payment for the birds but I DO want to be certain that they will be well cared for & loved. At one stage I purchased a large cage to house both birds together. Even though they are good friends outside the cages the male bird was very territorial in the new cage & was not happy letting the female get food (even though he would personally feed her). Persevered for a week & the hen was having to eat outside of the cage during flight time (they are out of their cages for approximately 3 hours, on 4 days a week. They have a diet of mixed parrot seeds & nuts & dried banana. Fruit including apples, kiwi, strawberries, plums, tomato, physillis. Veg including celery, a little broccli, a little mixed lettuce, rasped carrot. sprouts, a little shredded cabbage. In fact they seem to enjoy most seasonal fruits & veg & the outlay per week never exceeds a couple of £'s. The male is a chirpy happy inquisitive little soul full of character. The female has always been the quiet one of the 2. She does court her partner. Although he has attempted to do his male bit whether he's quite accomplished it fully is dubious as there's been no eggs from the female since prior to the male's introduction. So if you'd be looking for a mating pair then it's doubtful you would have success. I got the male bird to keep the female company in any case, not for breeding purposes. So if you are genuinely interested in wanting a pair of kakarikis & are familiar with the breed preferably, please contact me. I'm having trouble trying to attach some more photos to this so will attempt to add some in another thread. The photo in this thread is of the female.
