Hello, could someone tell me what sort my Kakariki is?
I know he's a red fronted and he's pied but what kind of pied, recessive or dominant? Or can you only tell this by breeding?
He is predominantly dark green with splodgings of lighter green and yellow markings on his tail feathers and some on his head, he has pied feet and his eyes are black with the red iris. He still has the blue wing feathers too.
The picture shows a bald spot over his eye but I have just treated him with ivermectin drops today so hopefully that will clear up soon. He's sulking at me now he hated having the drops put on!
Thanks.
I view these birds as dominant pied. This also means that it can be either 'Single factor' or 'Double factor'. The main differences with recessive pieds are the eyes and the amount of pied. Recessive pieds have no irises and are generally more pied(at least about 90%).
Dominant pieds can vary from one single pied toe to about 60-70% pied. The neckspot tend to become an upturned T-shape. Typical pied markings are the tail, outer wingflights, socks and upper chest. See my avatar. In heavy pieds, these markings merge together.
With Dominate pieds, is there
any tendency to throw females rather than males?
Do they (females)have a slighty larger beak than the female normal?
Eventualy, is it possible to get an all yellow DP?
After several molts, is it possible for the yellow to increase? _________________ My Spelling is Not Incorrect...It's 'Creative'
The dominant pied Kakariki shows similarity with the 'Continental Clearflight' and/or 'Dutch pied' Budgerigar. Combined with the recessive 'Danish pied' they produce clear yellow birds with dark eyes known as 'Dark eyed clears'. In the same manner combinations of dominant pied and recessive pied Kakariki results in clear yellow birds known as 'Goldcheck' in Europe or 'Black eyed clear' in Australia.

Although the most mutations are located on the male sex chromosome there is,as far as I know, no evidence of sex-linked pied mutations. However, there is a mention of such an occurence on this link. http://www.bestofbreeds.net/cyrilrogers/article5.htm

I am not sure but generally the largest beaks are found in pieds. I don't know if this is a secondary quality but it is interesting to follow.

I once saw a DP with a 90% pied but I think this is very rare. But not impossible. It depends of other genes which suppress or increase the pied. Also hormones exert influence on the amount of pied. Males are generally more pied compared to females.
This one I bred myself

I guess this is only possible with an incross of the 'Mottle'. This mutation has a progressive course.
