My husbands friends father in law gave us some Apple Tree branches that are untreated organic grown for our Kak.
I sterelized them and our bird is now enjoying his new found tree.
He was not interested at first and stayed on some of the dowling I left in but now he is hopping along it and nibbling and I can see it is going to be perfect for his nails.. I love the different sizes on it for him he so deserves the best that we can possibly give him so thankyou for the idea.

We have had him a week today and because the pet store had clipped his wings we have been able to let him out every day, now he knows us and will get up on my husbands hand or come running to jump on my stick or just hang around my feet to listen to stories... We are confident enough to not get his wings clipped in the future.
He actually found his own way back into his cage via a ladder we had got for him today to watch him figuring out a way back in was just unbelievable he did not give up until he had figured it out..

They definately don't forget!!

I looked at the pictures on the previous thread and your kakarikis nails don't look too bad. I am not a great fan of clipping nails but have done so in the past. The secret is to do it bit by bit as everytime you cut a little off, the quick recedes a little. If the quick bleeds (you have cut too much), use antiseptic powder or even baby powder to stop beeding, it helps a clot form.

I bought an adult pair of Indian Ringnecks and an adult pair of kakariki last year with very long nails. They were kept in suspended aviairies. I did not cut the anils but kept them in avariers with cement floors and lots of natural perches and within months the kakarikis nails were "normal". The ringnecks are improving far slower (probably because the are less active and spend less time on the ground).

If you must have them, never have more than one perch in a cage with sandpaper on otherwise your birds will probably have foot problems. Rather clip a little initailly and provide natural perches with rsome rough bark like pine.
