Hi - lovely site! Looks frighteningly addictive - I've read quite a few interesting threads already.

BUT - I have not found an answer to a very simple question, although I've tried searching and checked stickies. I'm simply wondering if it is ok to house a kakariki (eastern rosella) alone, ie without other birds in the environment (and indoors). I have had several types of birds before, one at a time, and they seemed to do well, but now I'm trying to be a better pet owner.

I live in a smallish apartment with my husband, we are both gone at work during the day. When home the bird would be allowed out. I've even considered purchasing a little tv that could come on every hour or so to provide extra stimulation while we're gone.

The bird in question is about 5 months old. At the store it is very lively and curious and "talks" almost incessantly, while his/her siblings sit together looking on. Although very charming, this one might actually be too noisy for our apartment building, so I might need to take one of the quieter ones instead. One of them flew up to me as I talked to it through the cage. I enjoyed the noisy one most, though...

All suggestions appreciated. Anxious

I would say a definate no..
1/Rosella tend to be a very aggressive bird, I used to have a roseella and a kakariki, as house birds, I could not even have them both out of the cages together
2/There is a good case that these 2 species could hybridise...not good..there are no records as far as we can find as to this happening in the wild, but there is 1 alleged case in captivity.

Rossella are a lot niosyer bird than the kakariki, espec just after dawn and before dusk

 Oops. Now I'm embarassed. I thought a rosella was a type of kakariki - for some reason I can't remember I was linked to this site when investigating "eastern rosella".

Thanks so much for your reply anyway. I'll look into kakarikis - not sure I've seen them here in Norway.

So, I wouldn't have the birds together, my intention is to buy one bird, alone. Solo ...

Thanks though!!

Groovy - thanks, that could be fun.

Actually, I grew up in the US, in case you're wondering about my English Wink .

Um, still wondering, can you keep a kakariki on its own? Again, without other birds around, and with a little extra stimulation as mentioned.

Thanks.

I only know english, but what im very suprised at is how fluent those in europe, and other countries are...even when they think they are not Shocked
There is facilities here to transale the site and transalate txt, thu they are a bit slow
In the quick search block to the left, and a transation window at the bottom of the page.

Yes kakariki can be kept on there own, just need good regular fly time, and toys, attention as you mention above...thu this apples to all pets...they are living animals, not an orniment on the mantle peice.

Parrots, in particular, will associate there owners as they would another bird....we have a king parrotas a house parrot, in a similar manner as out cat.
Run a search for house parrot

Thanks again, Steptoe -

I did the search and have already found a lot of useful tips. Will continue reading these before I make a final decision as to type of bird, needs, etc.

Wonderful! Applause
