Hiya,
We've had my 1yr old kakariki for 5months. He seems a happy little bird, he has a large cage and free flight of the sitting room and plenty of toys. But we were thinking of buying him a friend for company when we are at work. Are males very territorial? I know some members on here have loads of kaks together in avairies etc. but how would just 2 get on? Is it a wise idea? If so, would it be ok to get another male as I don't want eggs etc in the future. I would appreciate any suggestions with this as Batfink goes crazy and sings whenever he hears birds outside or on tv.
Thank you!

Only a guess, but I believe your kakariki is sexually mature by now and what he wants is most probably a female.
Anyway, I don't think that kakarikis are very territorial, so perhaps it would be ok to get him a playmate (better wait for the opinion of other more experienced members on this matter), even thought I'm sure he would be much happier if getting a female.
Thinking outside the square a little...
There are a lot of members here who have a kakariki and another species as pets, and get on real well together...
Maybe a cockiteil, burke, turk, even a king or crimson...
Introducing a new bird into anothers terroritory can often be a problem...same as new fish in a tank...
So I would relocate the cage, and rearrange, so they both move into the new enviroment together
Even if u get another kakarki, it is best to this anyway to advoid hassles before they happen _________________ My Spelling is Not Incorrect...It's 'Creative'

Probably a good idea indeed, if the goal is not breeding.
I have myself my pair of kakarikis (male and female both around 6-8 months old) living together in the same cage with a pair of cockatiels (male 10 months old, female around 1 year old).
I wouldn't say both species live in perfect harmony, or even get on real well together, but most of the time they live together in peace, with no major conflicts.
Nevertheless from time to time there is the occasional harassement, and amazingly it's usually the kakarikis that harass the cockatiels and for my surprise (after all kakarikis are smaller than cockatiels), the kakarikis rule!
But I guess the reason why both species don't live in perfect harmony is:
1- because initially for a short period the kakarikis were living alone in that cage and the cockatiels have been introduced later, the male first then the female;
2- both species have a pair of their own species.

Yes, I totally agree with that.
From my observations some species are indeed very territorial.
That's the case with rosellas for example, where a male living alone in a cage can even kill a female of his own species if introduced later!
Again thinking outside the square...
Why 1 cage?... they are only freinds/company.....do our children or our friends all have to sleep in the same room?
As I have mentioned before, we have a King that has his cage, but permently open, roams around the same as a house cat or dog.
We ran out of flights, so had kakarki inside as well, different cage...both where reasonably territorial of their own cages, but on the other hand would also visit each other to. Outside the cages they where great company

The difference between a kakariki and king is huge, the kakariki is the dominate bird...but more intiminating in an arguewmnt, rather than agressive...and sure one has to expect arguements..over they both want the same perch at the same time, or take a bath, or a toy...its too much to expect a perfect 100% harmony all the time. _________________ My Spelling is Not Incorrect...It's 'Creative'
great points and i'm pleased that generally they'll enjoy the company of each other in free flying time(however there is one favourite place my kakariki will love sit that i will be UNABLE to change..this i feel will cause isssues but it'll no doubt sort the pecking order!)
although my living room isnt greatly spacious, i do feel happier to let them have their own space too..so i think the best option wld be a cage each. atleast if they quarrel in free time one can retreat to his own pad!
A cage each can lead to issues also
They both have fly time, see the other cage and investigate...
Thu often you will have them investgating each others at the same time. _________________ My Spelling is Not Incorrect...It's 'Creative'
