Sorry for this lousy post..i have been reading most threads on this and am now confused..

My hen(around 15wks) has experienced quite afew changes recently..i mention this as maybe kikes can stress...as mentioned in posts
..i was wondering whether to treat her for mites as she seems to be scratching a fair bit and loosing grey downy feathers..

she has been recently introduced to a young male, and intimidating him....Hormonal?....

The temperature has dropped rapidly, so maybe a molt as it seems more common in winter..

The male however seems good..both eating, drinking, bathing well.

Thankyou to anyone able to advise! duno

hi.... mine malted in early winter.... dont know if that is normal tho...??? but i had a problem last summer with my female she lost loads of feathers and all the grey fluffy ones off her head......... i dosed them with mite stuff... ivorsomething.... on back of neck..... but it made no immediate difference..... i only got them last spring and from a garden centre not a breeder and i have a feeling.... maybe she had already been bred from....

i did notice Phooey(the male) pecking at her a bit when she was anoying him... but not enough to make her look the way she did. she didnt look any better until autumn when he molted too........ She is now looking lovely.....a massive improvement.....

i would do the mite/worm treatment and feed lots of fresh food.... (advice i had...!!!).... and then at least you know its not that....!!!! thats what i did then just decided she was prob born/hatched scruffy ........ and to my amazement ..... she suddenly started looking better..... you cant see her earholes at all now signlol

im no expert tho.......... just passing on advice i was given .... good luck!

It is very important to treat then repeat 10 to 12 days later, and clean cages etc, and final mist spray with 50/50 water and vinegar.

A kakariki that has been on a poor diet for some time, then go into molt can get very scruffy...a good, regular, varied, balanced diet is the essentual basis to everything.

Thankyou Steptoe! KiKi will eat fresh romania lettuce, carrot ,sweetcorn ,brocoli stems, celery ,peas, peppers, grape and apple..prettymuch daily, fruits like watermelon etc or offered every other day but she is reluctant to try. the boy however is offered the same but will only touch tomato....

Is there something else i shld be giving them?
fresh water is changed twice daily..and cage liners (newspaper) daily
the cage is washed down every other day....
am i doing something wrong here?

Not doing anything wrong

But think like this...
How long will you keep them. life excpectancy ..7 /12 years.

And there is no way you want careing turn into a chore..

Quote:

Fresh water each day...yes...a bit of thought and one can create an auto watering system that could last a few days.

Clean the cage....once a month/6 weeks, change paper once a week.
If you dice the veggies to about 1/2 peas size, after a while you will see what the eat each day, and how much...altering the mix and anount to suit...so as to have little debis on the bottom.
And do a mix that will last 2 to 3 days in a plastic container in the fridge...
This u can add diced up food scrapes to...calu stems, potato peelings, just about everything.

Seed if put in a deeper container, that they have to get into to feed, is far beter....dont put under a perch. ..this can last a week, even 2...a deep container stops the seed getting spreed around, and as gets down low they have to scratch around to find what they want....it also forces thenm to eat a varity of types, when the finish the sunflower quick.

Much appreciated.. i have learnt so much here, but putting into practice sometimes creates new questions Laughing
i love reading just about every post here..interesting and above all FRIENDLY!

have bought small water filters to try,to ecourage them to find the bath more pleasing than a water dish...see how it goes as not sure if they'll like fitting their beaks into the narrowish trough!

also managed to get the ivermectin?..think i got tht right...tho i was later informed just a moult, better to be on the safe side

Thank you again guys!
