Bitter almond - I would like to say that it's due to it's prussic acid but I'm not so sure that it's the case any more. Needless to say, it's still very dangerous; http://www.uni-graz.at/~katzer/engl/Prun_dul.html
Walnuts is - what I've heard of - a kind of stonefruit which generally is big no no when it comes to seeds (except for avocado where both flesh and seed is poisonous). However, I have no sources of walnuts being dangerous for birds, any one that knows? |

Thanks for your feed back...definately food for thought..i recently bought a bag of mixed nuts(a couple to which i no not of myself) but i broke them into small managable tasters for my birds to try..the girl wasn't interested much as she does with new foods, but the boy is more daring and willing to give anything ago...he quite liked the walnut very much..
i'll research alittle more to see if there is anything logged about do's and don'ts..
Thanks again!
appreciated.. |

You're :)
It would be great if you posted the results from you research here, I'm very interested when it comes to nuts myself! My birds love nuts, tho so far I've only dared to give them hazelnuts and a very few sweet almonds (I have tasted every almond that I've served them just to make sure they aren't the bitter kind)
Now I came to think of this as well. Macadamia, well known to be poisonous to dogs http://www.critterology.com/macadamia_nut_toxicosis_in_the_dog-157.html
Acorns. Consist tannin, which is poisonous. I will continue to search for info regarding acorns, since they are poisonous - then why aren't squirrels harmed? Interesting, I will keep you guys updated ;D |

Ok :)
Great news then, walnuts is cheap and I'm certain that my birds would love it. Hopefully it could make them be a little more quiet now in the mornings when the sun starts to get up early |

Yeah that's awesome :D
I've done the same with peanuts (forgot that I occasionally serve those as well) they love to just work with'em.
Thanks, will remember to do that in the future :) |

I give mine walnuts, almond slivers and brazil nuts, (although I understand in Brazil they're just called "nuts").
Mostly like Steptoe he gets a nut to fill his gob when he shrieks during tv shows. |

I have been giving my kaka pine nuts. She really enjoys them and they are given now and then as a treat. Are pine nuts ok? They don't seem to hurt her although now I am concerned about possible long term harm.
Any info would be great about pine nuts...yes or no to keep giving? Thanks. |

Pine nuts/seeds
The Roman armies where huge, and the logistics to suppliing a fast moving army over great distances difficult...each Roman solder carried a sack of pine seeds these are a highly concentrated food that enabled them to travel then next day defeat other armies for centuries. _________________ My Spelling is Not Incorrect...It's 'Creative' |

Excellent news then. Thanks Steptoe. I will continue to give my kaka pine nuts for treats, although, not too many, can't have her defeating me, I'm still the boss. Sometimes, I think she humours me on that one. |
