I just wanted to share my discovery of a great feeder for kakarikis. Until yesterday our kakarikis scratched seed out of every feeder we had given them, just for the fun of it. It was a big waste and made a mess too! Yesterday I decided to try out a plastic feeder we had purchased for the chickens we'll be getting soon, and it is PERFECT. The holes are the perfect size for kakarikis- just a bit larger than their heads so there's no chance of getting stuck- and while they like to try to scratch food out still, nothing comes out.

We got ours from http://www.mypetchicken.com/Feed_Water_Supplies-Chick_Feeder_Plastic-P189.aspx

To give them an "appropriate" outlet for scratching and foraging, we have this ridiculous toy we got from our breeder's shop that consists of a shallow plastic tray with a square of fake plastic grass glued to the bottom. Even our breeder thought it was the stupidest thing she'd ever seen, but the vendor sent her one free so she tried it out with her 'tiels and kakarikis. They love it! You just sprinkle seed or pellets or pretty much anything on the "grass" and they go to work foraging for it. I can't find it listed on her website but it could be made very easily as well.

The best we have come across for a no mess 'feeder is a plastic basn about 15" long 10" wide and 7" deep
About 1/2" seed inthe bottom lasts them a couple weeks
They can scratch all they like and very lttle gets thrown over the side
A couple good 'vibration' shakes the husks rise to the surface and are scraped off....the access seed they havnt eaten goes to the burkes/turqs

The scrapings are put in a similar container each week for the flock flight to dig thru and finish off what they can find.(plus they have their normal container.)

parrots are far more clean than ppl relise, they will not poo in their fodd source....but Do not place under perches.....

I've got the same problem, they land on the edge of the food container, pick-up what they want to eat, turn around, poo, and take off to eat elseware.

I dont have any answer for why some bird may do so....
Maybe its that all our birds are avairy breed and raised?

All of them, burkes, turqs, kings , crimsons all have their own cnr where they go to to poo, creating piles...including our avairy raised king house parrot.

And the same goes for several other breeders
