ok.the low down is this..recent clutch of chicks just about 7wks old (although attemting to feed self-dad still obliged)
2nd box) mom has eight eggs-two hatched today!)
sadly'dad' has made it ever increasingly difficault for her to feed and is looking pretty worn and thin.
have decided to remove 1st fledglings to shared cage in the hope they learn pretty sharpish
enabling hopefully 'dad' to concentrate feeding the female again as i don't hold much hope for her or this 2nd batch otherwise..
Have I done right by this..i had'nt invisioned the father to NOT feed his female...??
maybe the cock doesn't feed the hen while you are around. In fact it happens to me with a particular cockatiel pair, they are a bit nervous and if I'm around they hesitate to go back to the nest and feed the chicks. Even when brooding once they spent +30' both parents outside.
So I try to avoid interfering with them. Remember in the end each individual has their own character, regardless of the species.
Don't forget to provide the chicks with enough soft food while they wean.
Maybe the cock or the hen are moulting, that's maybe a reason they look a bit scuffy and skinny. A water bowl for bathing and a good supply of fresh food and they will be successful.
It would not harm to worm them, tho. Ivermectin works quite well, after I treated my birds are in much better feather condition, and the ones moulting now are doing quite ok, just a couple of pinfeathers here and there.
thanks guys for your replys -much appreciated.
yes dad seems to be in a moult..another chick is currently hatchin!
lets hope he gets back into his role..he's quite noisy now he's alone(naturally)
hopefully he'll call to her ...
Dear Steps,Pabloc and ev1,
update: we now have 5 chicks! and this time they appear to hatching two aday roughly, much better than last batch-some were weeeks apart
Anyhow, Milo still appears to have no interest in KIki, so out of curiousity, will she be strong enough to do this alone? has anyone experienced this...Milo was fantastic on his first batch what happen this time..
If the males is removed or dies the female takes over the males roll also, and visa versa
Thu Im not sure, would not think so that the male would sit/hatch eggs, but will carry on raising chicks. _________________ My Spelling is Not Incorrect...It's 'Creative'
Are you 100% sure the male doesn't feed the female?
In any case, as steps says... probably mum can do ok by herself.
Maybe Peter or Peterlimburg have more experience about this, but it's my polite guess that during the with young nestlings it's important that mum sits in the nest with the chicks. After the chicks are old enough and don't need the hen to keep them warm probably the cock can do flawlessly on his own (or the hen likewise)
In fact if you look at old posts some of the members here used to remove the cock or the hen to avoid double-clutching or to use them to breed with another adult, and chicks did ok.
Some also place the chicks on the cage floor when they are 3-4 weeks so the nest is empty and clean for the hen to lay a new clutch.
If breeding outdoors, maybe it's not a good idea to do this :)
