Dear All
I had about six red fronted kakariki overwinter around my place this year and was hoping to put out some (Doc speced) nesting boxes for them. Probably a little too late for this year but can anyone help me with where to best place these boxes, in what types of trees, bush or more open areas etc?. Also any magic cure for keeping starling OUT of the boxes?

BB

Hi!

very funny. Indeed kikes are clever, but starlings, blackbirds, etc... don't fall behind.
Amusing.
They are quite prolific where I have the birds myself but they never nested anywhere close, probably due to cats.
On one side I'd love to see a starling nest, on the other side I prefer it like this, my birds are safer because they are not exposed to parasites, etc...
Still... they drop by often to feast on the seeds my birds spill.

By the way... I didn't know kakariki were seasonal in the wild.

Best of luck with the nests, if they finally decide to nest nearby we would love to see s05

Cheers / Pablo

Hi BB..... w3c

Did you find out DoC specs for Kakariki nestboxes from a website?, if so, do you have a link to it?.

Starlings could be problem, but Kakariki can be fairly aggressive around there nesting area, so maybe alright.
Also, if it's a real tall (even a meter high!) "boot" type box with an internal ladder, a starling would have trouble getting out perhaps and may not be keen to even go in when it inspects it while empty; though they are capable of building up material that would reach the top.

Well worth a try BB, best of luck.

I would look for a position where the hole isn't in the direct direction of the sun, but is facing away; and in dappled/filtered light, as in no direct sunlight for more than 15 mins and no complete shade for a similar time, this should be easy in trees, and as high up in trees as you can get it.

If you have them around at the same time next year perhaps try feeding them, as they may be open to an easy feed in winter, hauling up a bundle of something tasty to an area near where you install any boxes.

If you've got pulleys ropes etc set up, just watch out you don't drop a 20kg massive boot box on your head d'oh! .
