if you could please offer some advice and help for breeding kakarikis. i've bred birds for many years around 20 years ago and has had 2 pairs of kakarikis for the first time for the last 8 months and they started mating around 4 months ago each having around 3 batches of eggs ranging from 6-10 eggs in the batch. We've had no luck up to now, i've been taking the eggs out after around 28 days and sometimes the hens have eaten the shells for the grit. The few that have been left that turned dark and i've opened them and each time there has been baby kakariki in some of them and every time gradually the baby kakarikis have been bigger but not survived and hatched. Any help? Currently they're being fed seed and now and again treated to apple, each batch of eggs has been fertilised but the eggs haven't managed to get to a stage were they've hatched, the temperature is fine and the kaks are well looked after and are all doing their job in the breeding process ie sitting on the eggs properly. I'm guessing it could be to do with their diet any help or ideas on what to feed them to help with the diet? I'd be very grateful if you was able to reply even if its brief thank you!
There are plenty of forums and posts on this site with diet advice for you to read and understand. If you take this information on board then at least you can rest assured that you will have this area covered. There is no doubt that the birds' success stems from their dietary intake.
