After recently finding out my pied male is a hybrid- my question is, where to go from here with him? I know NZ has specific rules to abide by, and I thoroughly agree with keeping the species alive and 'pure'. I should, with this reasoning, prevent him from ever breeding. He is still a very beautiful bird, and will be treated as such. But- What would you do??

Hi m8

I would keep him as pet or aviary bird, if you have certain attachment to him. Or you can always find a good pet home for him/her. Or another good use for it is being a surrogate mother of other birds, especially if he is a cock.

This is the same as a bird that has some defect but is clearly not suffering. For instance I have a cockatiel with just 1 wing, and had another one that was born with feet problems.
The one with feet problems I gave away, the 1-winged one I keep it, as I feel itīs not nice to give away such a bird. But she lives happily in the holding aviary, I just donīt use her for breeding.

I think culling is a bit unfair if we speak of healthy individuals, and in this case it's not a real risk to biodiversity, at least not for the captive stock.
I have seen +/- 300 kakariki last year in Avisan bird fair, and I just found 1 hen to be worth buying.
If they are being bred by the hundreds every year in whole Europe, I think 1 more hybrid won't dent the quality of the captive stock here.

Part of the problem is that many people buy hybrids, but then as they have spent the money the feel entitled to get it back and will put the birds to breed, or think "it doesnīt really matter".

Same as when people breeds birds of low quality, bad feathers, etc... they say "itīs a cockatiel/budgie/etc... who cares about that". Well... I do, and I can tell thereīs a difference between breeding mediocre birds or trying to breed the best possible birds.
And others can tell too... thereīs a French cockatiel breeder... that in the 2 last seasons has downsized from 120 to 60 pairs but breeds the same amount of chicks. Reason: strict selection!

To be honest, I prefer to look like a self-important moron and walking away from a shop or a breeder without any birds, than looking like a mediocre breeder.

I have seen in flesh the differnce between mediocre breeders, and others like for instance Thierry Duliere, Peter Wouters, etc...
Peter Woutersī kakariki... they look like from other planet (no offense to other breeders, itīs just the only ones I saw in person)

Same happens with cattle, plants ... even humans.

Ok.... enough of ranting signlol

Cheers / Pablo
