Hi all,
I recently purchased 3 young kakas for hand rearing. One of the birds has a badly splayed leg. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance
Any birds with splayed legs, espec young, any good self respecting breeder will cull out
Splayed legs are a very strong indication of poor diet when raising chicks, and possibly even in the months upto breeding season
Any self respecting breeder doesnt give poor diet so they very rarely, out of hundreds of birds dont get splayed legs
Yes can be fixed....by a vet at great expense with operatios that involve cutting and resetting tendons and splints over many months.

Splayed legs can be attempted to repair if the chicks are very young. You can use a piece of cloth, some thick cotton thread or a thick piece of wire and tie the legs so that they rest in a normal position.
Still... I think the bird won't be ever 100% fit, and it's probable that with the splayed legs you might have other problems (for instance other birth defects, or problems derived of the faulty perching of the bird).
Only advice I can really give is to check thoroughly any bird that you are going to buy. Beak, eyes, legs, fingers, nails, general feather condition, color, etc...
And never buy unweaned chicks to handfeed from any breeder, unless you know it's a person with high standards.
