Hi, we have a one year old Buttercup Kakariki called George. We have had him a couple of weeks but are struggling to hand tame him. Someone has suggested getting a female hand tame bird as this may help George to trust us. If you can help with this request we would be very grateful as my 13 year old Daughter is desperate to have a bird that will sit on her hand - even if only briefly! Many thanks and hope to hear from you soon. Rolling Eyes

Hi and thank you for your response. We are new to Kakariki keeping and having searched the threads I am unable to locate anything which confirms or denies what we are doing and how it is going so wrong! We have been told by one breeder that we just need to keep him in his cage for now and every other day gently follow him around the cage until he sits on our hend (that didn't work and we worried about getting him stressed out). Someone else said just put your hand in the cage and ignore him and that will work (again with no luck) and now we are all out of options. We have had George three weeks now and he isn't any tamer now that he was before! I have put a thread in the Members discussion 'New boy Goerge' re him not liking fruit and veg but no response yet! What are we doing wrong, maybe we are being too cautious so as not to scare him? duno

you are correct.....you need to have your bird feel very save in their cage, even to the extent they become terroritial about it...this also makes it easier for you to get them back to the cage

Get a coffee, a book, and a slice of apple, make yourself comfortable.....
put yoyr hand in the bottom of the cage, holding the apple and keeping still...Do not look at the bird if posible...read your book and enjoy your coffee.
Do as often as possible for as long as possoble
If they come down and bite you, they are not..they are just checking if you are eatable....a small movement will discourage.

Within a couple days it will be feeding from your hand.
Its all about trust.
