Hi people hope someone can advise me on this. I got two chicks (8 weeks). The older one(by 1 day) is great:fledging nicely, eating by himself, outgoing ,typical kakariki. The other little one(hen) is really short of feathers, especially on back and breast, hides in the quail house and is very small.I think her ma is plucking her for her nest, but dad is still feeding her.I will divide my aviary tomorrow, but am loathe to remove her when she's not weaned.I have a buttercup cock in the house which we rescued from an old lady who fed it on sunflower seeds for 4 years. The question is:- If i was to put the babe in with him would he feed her for the few remaining days till she's weaned, thereby letting her grow some feathers, poor little bugger
On the advice of Peter some time back.....he suggested in such cases to put the young unweaned chick in a flight with unattached males and they would carry on feeding them....sort of like 'uncles'
With some hesitation we did so, it was quite amazing, withing 1 min the 'uncles' where down with the weaned chicks feeding.
! of the males, which we where real worried about is bit of an agressive rogue, attacks any bird except the other 2 that he is housed with.
We have repeated this several times....to the extent of confidence we can drop the young chicks in and not bother to keep an eye on them. _________________ My Spelling is Not Incorrect...It's 'Creative'
