One of the things i try to do is listen.
I have gotten great help on this forum. I would like to share what i do.
I am using 2 trays to feed my KAKS. One tray only budgie seed. This keeps them from just eating the sun and safflower seed. The second tray i place a ant proof dog bowl with 2 sections. In one i place sprouted seed in the other vegies with sprouted seed. It gets them out of the seed tray and into the good stuff.
I also spent $ 30.00 AUD and purchased a heavy duty hand held grater.
This allows easy grating of all the vegies and, makes it a pleasant chore. A lot easier than all the chop chop!!

I work real hard at being lazy...I will spend a day or so putting Auto waterin in so I dont have tro do it...Or spend 3 yrs putting i a mercury bay lawn so I only mow it 2x a yr.

This is what we now do after trying stuff, visting other avairies, zoos etc

Seed....we supply coctel mix, enough for 14 days in a plastic tray that is only 1/3 full...that way they dont throw it everywhere..thats more work for me....Theey go thru the sunflower i a couple days, then get into the rest...Forced variation and time to wear off the sunflower energy

Veggies, we make up something like 4 to 6 Kg every 4 dayas on ave.
If that quanty is ripped , ground, chupped any way other than a eazor sharp carvong knife, it will go off in 2 to 3 days in the fridge.
you know your carving knife is sharp when you can shave the hairs on your arm...before putting the steel to it....If it is not that sharp I would not have kakariki . I use a proper quality steel knife that is not stainless.

We pick most of the veggies fresh from the garden just before chopping Start to cleaned up 20 to 25 mins

When chop...lengthways 1st about 2 to 4 mm apart....cut into legths about 110 mm long then cut sideways...then a quck chop of the few big peices.
I will do each handful
3 carrots , a good slice/serving of pumkin
1 capsium, 1/2 beetroot.
4 or 5 celery stems
doz large silverbeat stems, doz chok bok stems leave, heap of puha, nastersun leaves flowers, dandiloin leaves flowers, sage , mint, parsley. This is a bundle if hold your hands 50mm apart, face up, streached out, it over hang both sides and if put anymore on will fall off...(I have a 255mm hand span) this is split into 2 1/2s
The cali letuce, broccoli stems etc left over from our food prep
Then throw in just over 1/2 kg frozen sweet corn and 1/2 kg frozen green peas

I messed with sprouting seed...too much messing around....When the vegs are about 1/2 to 2/3 gone, and our milk and eggs are getting low, I pick up a bag of mung or alfla/mustard mix....chop up and mix in with the veggies I dont put in at the begining cause they make the rest of the veggies go off early.....
I know how much to feed 2x a day, and what mix, by watching how much (if any) is left over and what it is.

I made little flap doors out of cage feeders, so dont have to go in, and takes (fridge to fridge) 2 maybe 3 minutes???

Hi!

I have been sprouting seed and pulses (pulses are rich in protein) for some time now.
Rinse.
Soak 20-24hr. changing water a couple of times
Let it drain in a strainer for several hrs
And place in the fridge in a plastic container, lasts 4-5 days without going off.

I must sprout because cockatiels barely touch the veggies.
Only leaf greens like cabbage and lettuce.
But I think even if I only had kakariki I would sprout a bowl of seed and pulses to feed 2x a week, especially with chicks in the nest.
I believe it's a good source of vitamines, enzimes, etc... and all birds accept it readily.

Each one has his own small little ideas, and small variations, but I think Steps probably has the best workmethod I have seen so far.

Cheers / Pablo

How many Kakariki's do you have?

I have my first bird, that is a Kakariki, he's been here only about a week. I'm feeding a few veg/fruit every day but her barely touches it. He likes his seed. If I hold a piece of broccoli, he will nibble at it. but won't touch it if it's in the bowl of fruit/veg.
This morning I left him with a grape cut into 4 pieces, a baby carrot copped small, and a piece of broccoli and a green bean mostly cut up but left one long piece in case he would eat off the long piece. Maybe I'm not cutting small enough. Tonight I gave him some celery chopped small, and some left long for him to nibble on. a few celery leaves cut into about 1/2 inch peices, 1 grape sliced (he didn't touch the grape from this morning) I held a piece in my hand and he nibbled on it a few times. put it back in the dish.. it's still there. He loves pomogranite but todays is still in the dish. Am I giving too much, too little, not the right size?

Thids is because of poor feeding habits of the parents..weaning onto good diet can take months.

Sorry Steptoe, yes I meant the question of how many birds for you as I was looking at the amount food you chop and put in the fridge for a few days. After I posted my questions, I did find a picture of the chopped food, it doesn't appear my chopped food is too big. I also have mealy worms that I haven't given him yet. I don't know when is the best time. Should I put them on the bottom of the cage, in with the fruit and veg or in with the seed. I really am a newbie with birds. Brady seems happy enough, he will stop up on my hand and I can move around the house with him on me. We keep 2 cages one 4 1/2 ft X 19" X 30" on the main floor of the house but because my husband and I spend alot of time in the basement watching TV etc we keep another cage near us. (we want him to be a talker), the other cage 3 1/2 ft X 18" X 18". He has lots of toys in each.. we keep his food and water on the bottom. His favourite toy in a hamster's wheel. both cages have one and spends alot of time in them sleeping and walking. He's a cute little guy.

Do you think I'm on the right track with what I'm doing with the feeding?

Feed morning and afternoon...times ..u will notice when they start feeding at these times
Dont mix fruit and veggies...makes the veggies go dloppy and off
We dont chop fruit like the veggies rather push 1/2 and sliced into the flght mesh
Friut is feed during the day
What ever you feed, feed to miniumal waste not no waste minmal....If they get constsnt varied all the time they tend to loose that "go crazy over treats" their bodies are no longer chassing certain nutiants.
Depending on the time of yr, molting there veggie mix changes slightly, which one notices what they are and are not eating...left on the floor of the flight at next feed.
