hi there i have got a new kaka 2 weeks ago not sure how old it is but the pet shop i bought it from said they had got it in a week before i bought it never had a bird before so proberly a bit nieve but i got it now and i want the best for it my problems are

1. it does not seem to be a very vocal bird it makes a bit of a noice in the morning around ten in the morning for about ten minutes and thats it i have put this down to it getting used to it new home

2.the past couple of days when we try to get close to it the bird seems make a noice the only way to describe it is like its crying my girlfriend is convinced its bcus its lonely is she right

3.it doesnt seem to want to leave its cage we leave it open allday its a type of cage that opens at the front and also the top opens up but it only flys off when we put our hands near him but it only lands on top of a lamp near its cage and it will stay there untill we go near it again it lets us get close with our hands down at our side and makes that crying noice but as soon as we move our hands it flys straight back to its cage

4.it as not got any tail feather can anyone explain why this is when we bought it the petshop told us that it was malting is this the reason and will they grow back

5.i have been looking on this site about diet and we have tried the diffrent fruits and chicken legs as suggested but it wont eat anything but the bird food the petshop suuplied is it a case of just keep trying it untill it start eating them i have also try it with millet spary and it as not even touched that

sorry to go on a bit but if anyone could give me some pionters on the best way to look after the bird i would be very gratefull
thanks alot

hi m8

w3c to the forum!
about diet, just leave the diced veggies in a bowl, sometimes they take a couple of days to get used to new food, the key is insisting.

About taming, please use the quicksearch block on the left side of the forum. You'll find many posts/threads with tips/experiences from other members.

As a general rule, let the door open, grab a cup of tea and a magazine/book and just wait, they are quite curious and eventually get closer to you.

The problem with the tail, usually it's because they are housed in small cages at petshops so it gets scruffy or even gets broken.

Cheers / Pablo

Or you could buy an expensive book, a deck chair, and make a cup of coffee...set up the chair in the avairy, or next to your cage, put your hand still in the cage, read the taming book and enjoy your coffee, ignoring the birds...
When you have finished the book, you will realise the birds have come to trust u , friendly....and throw the book away Whistle

:fun:
Use the quick search as Pab says above Rolling Eyes
And any questions then ask.

Your little bird has moved 3 times in a short time, From its original owner to the pet shop, then to you. Let it settle in first. It will then become vocal, while its sunny get the cage outside making sure you fastern any openings for extra security, ( i use a bit of garden wire ). If you have a garden put some dandilion leaves and flowers in the cage ( they love them). Avoid any growing near the road side or any where they have been sprayed. Slices of apples, pear, grapes, tomatoes, greens, etc. Kakies love sunflower seeds and dried chillie pepers bought from pet shops BUT these are strickly as a treat, ( see them as chocolate). When you kaki is out of its cage put a large dish ( roasting dish, or a large bowl no more than say 10cm deep) on the floor with cold water in and in time it will have a bath. Make sure you have a towel under the dish as they do like to splash. Good luck
