PostPosted: Thu Nov 11, 2010 9:22 pm    Post subject: 4 new eggs!!! first timers

Our pair off Kaks have managed to lay four new eggs,......they are 5 days since laying. The hen spends most of the day in the box on the eggs. The male stays close and feeds her regularly.....she will come out for a feed and a wash, regularly.

The nest is pretty bare apart from a few wood chips the hen managed to scrape off the back corner of nesting box. (chips and other nesting mulch i had previously placed they turfed out).

I dont want to take the chicks out of the box once they hatch....I would prefer nature and the parents do their own thing....is there any advice anyone can give me to ensure all goes well....especially the first weeks after hatching. ?

I am living in Sydney, day temp is getting up to high 20's during the day and lows of 15 at night, avairy gets early to mid morning sun then protected by shade during hottest part of day.....they eat fresh small parrot mix, daily fresh apples and they to love fresh grass clippings....

Many thanks TC <v> <v>

I havent done the chick thing yet, but would say your birds need MUCH more fresh foods in thier diet.
My two have AT LEAST 8 different veg a day, AND 3 or 4 fruits, AND boiled egg/meat/split bones, AND herbs, AND sprouted seeds....

Hi guys,

tc, as moko says try to feed the birds a bit more varied diet and do not forget about giving them a protein source.
If you read an old thread 'what do you feed your kikes' you'll find many useful hints.

Cheers / Pablo

Hi tc i live in Sydney as well. I feed mine a sprout mix i make up being sunflower, safflower, mung beans, loopens and dunn peas. They also get dry seed, endives, chickery, spinich, apples and slices of beetroot. I also put some of the frozen vege mixes in with the sprouts every second day. I am guessing you need abit more nesting material in the box as these guys will get sprayed legs quite easy if there is not enough to grip on. I also keep the boxes down at least 300mm from the roof of the aviary and i open the lids up abit more each day depending on the heat and the size or amount of chicks in the nest.
Cheers Kev

hey m8,

congratulations for the chicks, they look nice (good feather condition, no hybrids, etc..).
Sorry but I can't help with the sex, but some of the guys here have a sharper eye to tell sex.

Good luck with the new batch of eggs!

Cheers / Pablo
