hi
for the last couple of days my pair of green kaks have been acting differently so iv'e kept a eye on them from a distance and this afternoon i heard the faint sound of a chick coming from the nest box Laughing

i'm gonna keep my distance as the hen abandoned the eggs last time so this will hopefully be her first successful batch ... i don't want to distract her in any way.

i was wondering what happens if a chick dies will the parents throw the chick out as i just want to leave them to it ?

I have found the rare dead chick slellton buried way down deep in the nesting material when cleaning a nesting box out.
Rare for us to loose a chick..die.
I would check the nesting box in a couple days, just after the morning veggie feed when both are out...quck glance and out...

thanks steptoe
i just had a peak and there is one chick cuddling 6 eggs .
the eggs were layed whilst she was sitting them because she lost here first 3 eggs "burried then broken" and then a couple of days later she hurriedly layed another 7 ... 4 in the first week then another 3 in the second week.
this isn't how this hen normally lays and i put it down to her laying then loosing them first eggs.
i guess the other eggs will hatch over the next week hopefully duno

I have yet to see a hen lay eggs in a constant manner...1st, we dont observe real close, nesting boxes MT or what ever get checked at least once, sometimes 2x a week....
Mainly to put 1` rock on top if a hen is laying or sitting and 2 rocks when they hatch.

Sometimes they lay 3 or 4 sit then lay the rest, which results in eggs hatching over nearly 2 weeks.
I have 1 nesting box, all hatched in a cpuple days, and 2 others 1st 2 chicks come out in last 2 days, but each has chicks that are still a good week 10 days off being ready.
We had discussions on larger 1st hatched or last smaller years back...Once weaned doesnt make any constant difference which are bigger or whatever.

I dont know what makes the hens so inconsistant, but there must be a reason or reasons....weather, change in fruit type, or protien type, or stray cats cruising the neighbourhood.....??????

I have a theory not all eggs are meant to hatch, but act as hot water bottles for young chicks during the short periods the hen leaves the nest. .....

That is not normal....sometimes an egg will get broken, not this early thu...eggs that get buried are usually when a batch gets abanononed...otherwise its normal to still have a couple eggs rolling around after the chickes leave the nest.

yes.....As the chicks get larger they get more hardier.
You do have the 2nd nesting box in?
It is about this time she is looking for a place to lay the next lot of eggs....
Then about the time , shortly after the chicks adult feathers start to sprout, she lays the next batch.

you do have another flight ready?
you can let the male wean them off, but if like me, dont like leg rings...have 3 mature males in a holding flight...and maybe other weaned tennages from prevuios batches....when u see the fledged chicks eatting seed, a few veggies, iris still not devaloped, anf the beak still pink...the spare males will finish the weaning.
If you wait till the iris devalpoes and beak goes silver, you can have difficults ID the chicks and parents
