I bought some black eyed beans yesterday and put them in soak ready to try and sprout them, since doing this I have read that black eyed beans are considered toxic to most parrot species but can not see anything specific on Kakarikis. I have learnt that the Kakarikis are so different in so many ways in comparison to other species - are they safe for them to eat?

I had posted previously on Bass's bad moult and have seriously changed his diet and am incorporating much more proteins and carbs as opposed to the high sugar diet he was having before and have seen a marked improvement in him. He adores chicken and pulses so wanting to test him on sprouted beans and seeds.

Many thanks

I dont know about black eyed beans
Yes beans are not recommended....and once again I say rubbish
We grow dwarf green and butter beans that are chopped up (the ones that the seed shapinside is starting to be seen) young ones are for us..If one is going to have a veggie garden one may as well eat top resterant top quailty foods out of it)

These are feed regularly to allour parrots in the veggie mix, espec when in season.
Also the bean plants, when pulle out of the garden are thrown in the holding flight....the parrots eat, rip apart , poo it out as fertilser and generall pre mulch for the compost bin.....And the poo in the remains makes the compost bin break down real fast...

Beans being toxic, well maybe if thats all they have to eat..as part of a consistant balanced diet, they eat what they need, you will seewhat they dont need as to what is left over next day...but that doesnt mean they havnt eaten some of that partular veggie.

Thanks Steptoe, I am def beginning to see not to trust all to what I hear and read regarding these little adorable critters - thinking of expanding my flock outside and looking forward to seeing the varieties I can offer them
