I have had my Kak, Bob, for about 6 months. I live in Sydney it is getting colder now and approaching winter.

There is a lot of talk about moulding here and heavy mould vs light mound. I would like to know how much time should he mould for?

Bob has been moulding now for about 5 weeks, his coat looks fine, but seems to lose lots of feathers.

He has also stop singing/kakking.

Before I take him to the vet to chekc for mites, is there any food I should try?

Any other suggestions?

Thanks,
David

As to heavy moult and like moult, several of us have dissucussed this in the past.....We tend to agree diet has a lot to do with it...
Consistant , varied balanced....veggies fruit meat , bones etc over a long period before moult starts.

Other than a few feathers aroud the avairy floor, pin feathers on the bird, it would be hard to tell if our kakariki...well all our species are moulting

Length of time....personally I think that may also be related to Diet, which of caose directly relates to health and body functions.
We have had new birds in, there have been times of considerable concern as has drawn out to many months...autumn right thru to early spring
I have never 'timed' the moult period...If not sitting or laying, starts around early autumn over before winter....approx 6 to 8 weeks ...most of our kakariki...which is not to different from Sydney in the seasons....a few pin feather grow out and they will be finished.

IF there is any doubt, re mites and/or worms.....couple drops of invermectin on the back of the head, Impotant to repeat 10 to 12 days later (catch eggs hatching and prevent resistance build up) mist spray birds in flight, and all surfaces with 50.50 water vinegar once a week 2 or 3 times, then once every 4 to 6 weeks as maintance.
Add a few drops of apple cider vinegar to the veggies once or twice a week.
