please could anyone help me , im very new to kaks and worried that my hens eggs are not fertile , she laid her fist egg three weeks ago now and laid seven more every other day she is doing everything right sitting them rolling then , they are a young pair and im worried she has gone through all this for nothing , could anyone please help ?
Candling.
Where you shine a light thru the egg to see its contents.
Check the 'quick search' box for more info, as I have never done it. _________________ ~~~Sanjra~~~
What i do is pick the eggs up carefully and hold them up ( in daylight). If after 3 weeks they are still pinkish inside the eggs i know there not fertile. If they are dark ive found that they have a ghick inside. This is what i do with all of my eggs, ranging from zebra finches, Java's and my kakies. If you candle them via a light place on the egg becare full not to use a powerfull light or keep it on the egg for to long pref a few seconds is long enough.

thanks very much for the advice all !!!! i will try candling and maybe give them another week in the nest , ill be gutterd for her if they duds as she has put alot of effort into it , should i just take them all away at once if they are not fertile ? will she get distressed by this ?
If u have a pen lite torch, hold the index finger and thumb around the lens to make a craddle, place the egg on your fingers...makes a good 'candle' for small light eggs like kakariki.
If all are infertile you can remove, she should lay withing acouple weeks or so again.
You do not mention having a male...
We find that in most cases its is the male thats the problem, usually physical...another common issue is not having suitable large branchs as pewrches to allow stable mating. _________________ My Spelling is Not Incorrect...It's 'Creative'

thnks for that mate , yes the male is with her in cage , i will try this tommor if all are infertile , i will try the larger perches see if that makes a difference as hes was treading her alot didnt seem to have trouble but im knew to this so time will tell , thanks steptoe !!
If u have the std dowl perches, take them out and use for kindling to start the fire.
Replace with some old sticks/branches.....we use between 1 and 2 " diameter....well some are up around 4/6"
Small dowl gives poor grip and can cause feet deformaty if that is the only perches there. _________________ My Spelling is Not Incorrect...It's 'Creative'

Hi all,
my kakariki (marge) has laid three eggs and has been sitting on them for four weeks now... i have shined a light on them as you said and i have two that are yellow (which i presume arnt even fertile??) and a pink one..... my questions are this.......
what does yellow mean?
what does pink mean?
how do you tell if there is something inside them?
when should i take the non fertile eggs out??
Any eggs that are pink after 4 weeks i remove. The pink colour always reminds me of a finger nail ( a pale pink and white/ clear ) and are not fertile.
hi
your hen will clutch first and then start incubating after all the eggs are laid..
then count 10 days into incubation from the laying of the last egg.... at this point when you candle your eggs tiny veins will be visible if the egg is fertile.
they can be difficult to see sometimes so a complete dark room helps a lot. _________________ thanks brucie.....
so a pinkish colour or if its yellow or clear means they aren't fertile, but if you see tiny veins then it is.... and you should remove none fertile eggs after four weeks?? is this correct?
