im new to keeping birds, my aim was to stick to one pair but i have anded up with two breeding pairs in the same aviary.
they are fine together normally but they have both started laying eggs and one pair has become very aggressive. is it a no no to have two breeding pairs in the same aviary.
any advise will be very much appreciated.
We have breed with several pair in the same flight after several yrs of experimenting...but it took a couple yrs to get the pairs used to each other without breeding....and we only where successful with that pair only.
Get the other pair out ASAP....not always but it has been known, espec when gets close to egg laying and there after they could kill the other birds.
This behavour is common to most parrot species..turqs burkes, red rumps , love birds, kings , crimsons, sulphur crested and all th cockatoos....
And only occassionally with budgies and cocketials _________________ My Spelling is Not Incorrect...It's 'Creative'
Cockatiels will not really kill or harm each other, but they disturb each other and the breeding results are not that good. From budgies I heard lots of horror stories of hens destroying eggs and chicks of other pairs. Probably depends on the size of the aviary also.
It's very interesting to throw in several birds together and let them choose partner, but breeding is best done in individual cages/aviaries, whatever the species.
Unless... you know well your birds and you are sure they can co-habit. Some of my kakariki tolerate perfectly certain cockatiels breeding in the same aviary. Same as some of my cockatiels breed well in colony, but other cockatiels must not breed in colony because they chase around the other cockatiels.
If you only have 1 aviary a possible solution is using 100x50x50 cages to house the breeding pairs, and use the aviary as holding aviary to house the chicks and non-breeding adults. _________________ AD ASTRA PER ASPERA
