Hi, I have just got my first kakariki's. We have two girls and a boy who have been hand reared. Two of them are very friendly and love nothing more than to hop all over us but one appears to be slightly younger than the other two and not quite so confident. Please can you tell me the best way to get her more used to me, she will come out the cage after a few attempts but really is not keen on being with me. Do I just leave her to it and wait for her to come to me or should I keep trying to get her to sit on me and give her treats?
Hi im sure the younger one will follow the others after a while.. try offering treats i used sunflower seeds with my first 2 who got very tame ... i just held my hand near with some seeds and sorta look the other way a bit and they would get close and take one.... after a few days of doing this they would land on my hand and take a seed .. eventually they would happily come and sit on me without the treats ... and got very cheeky! dont grab at them tho cuz if they get scared of hands you will have probs....good luck and enjoy your birdies _________________ May........
Many thanks I will try this - I love a bit of bribery and corruption :-)
I have never seen these birds before and went to buy two lovebirds until we saw these guys and ended up with 3 Kakariki's instead but seeing as I am originally a kiwi myself it was somehow appropriate.
They are so funny and have already stolen my heart
but seeing as I am originally a kiwi myself it was somehow appropriate.
deffinatley.......!!! when i first saw them i had no idea where they came from ...but fell in love with them... went home and did some research and discovered the were from NZ which suprised me as at the time i was seriously considering moving to NZ..!!!!
love birds are noisy too....!!! you made the right choice!!!! _________________ May........
They def capture your heart. I started off with 2 and now I have 7. Only 1 of them is a talker though - he is inside and the other 6 are outside in the birdroom.
He makes up for the other 6 though that is a fact
I can sit and watch them for hours on end, they are so entertaining
To get your birds more tame to the left is a quick search block type in tame
Basically it is about 2 core things
1/ Trust
2/giving them reason to do something in particular
The intial is get a book, a cuppa coffee and a comfotable chair.
put your hand in the cage with bit of apple or mint (treat)...do not look at the bird..ignore it..eventually it will come down, land, walk around.
10 to 20 mins 2x a day.
When it starts to get confident (trust) start to move your fingers to eventually turning your and over.....and start talking to it.
If bites bit hard growl ...that doesnt effect the trust. _________________ My Spelling is Not Incorrect...It's 'Creative'
Many thanks for all your help, they come out fine on my hand and two are happy to sit - well jump all over me :-)
Last night I had pomegranite seeds in my hand and the little one sat happily for about 10 minutes on me eating then stayed when she had finished so hopefully if I do this each night she will learn to trust me.
Please can someone tell me how often they moult as two of then have had there wings clipped which is horrible to see as one can fly and the other two are desperate to follow her, also why do people clip them is there a good reason as I cant understand it?
Excellent news and great progress - they love pomegranite seeds - so sounds like you have found the winning formula in your household.
Ref the wing clipping - I have no idea why people do this, IMHO birds have wings to fly, I think it cruel even for a budgie to be clipped and especially an active little critter such as the kakariki.
Some claim to clip for the safety of the bird whilst they are settling so not to fly in to walls etc or just to make the taming easier - it's harder for them to fly away!
Although I am completely against sitting on the wing clipping wagon - like I said though this is only my opinion.
Ref moult I have only seen mine have a 'heavy' moult once a year, but peeps with more experience than me (only been keeping them for almost a year now) may have a better indication for you on that one.
Any claims for the reason to clip, is always around the ease and convience of the owner and their own lazyness, with no consideration to the well being of the bird....the fly into walls , mirrors is just plain BS that sounds good.
There are old posting discussing this and from kakariki owners who describe attitude changes and obesity in their birds. _________________ My Spelling is Not Incorrect...It's 'Creative'
