Hello everyone!

My Kak's have are currently raising their first babies. 8 eggs, 3 hatched. The oldest baby was 3 weeks yesterday an the youngest will be 3 weeks on Sat.

I would like these babies to be parent raised and hand tamed, I have read on here that a few people take the babies out of the box from 3 weeks to get them used to people, so I thought this would be a good way of doing it.

Could anyone who has done this give me advice on exactly what to do?
Can I take all three babies or just test it with the eldest first? Should I feed them some hand rearing formula once they are out so they like coming out?
How long should I have them out and how often?

The pair have been at it again so I expect the girl will move to the second nest box in the next couple of weeks.

This is the first time I have bred so would appreciate any answers!

Thank you Laughing

Hi Toto,

Good to hear they are doing so well, congrats!!

Because of their curious and unbiased nature kakariki tame VERY easy.
If I were you I would let the parents take care of them as long as possible.
Feeding is also a social event. Kakariki learn from eachother and from their parents. Stuff us humans could never teach them.

As soon as mom disapears in the 2nd box, dad will probably take over the feeding and raising of the young ones entirely.

Play with them, interact, hold them as often as you like, but don't give them formula unless you absolutely need to and stay in sight of the parents. Feeding them formula as well, even just one time a day, might disturb their rhytm and you don't want to risk daddy giving up the feeding entirely. Count your lucky stars they are such good parents and leave them to it.

When they are somewhere around 40 day's you could give them some millet spray or soft foods like veggies, fruit or germinated seeds. Some peeled sunflower seeds in your hand and they will be all over you in no time!

Taming is about trust. It's easy to pick them up as long as they can't fly. But if they distrust their caretaker, no matter how often they were held when young.. as soon as they can fly, they will make sure to stay out of reach.
So.. show them your best side and you will make friends for ever :)

We have never hand raised....but take a different approah
Let the parents/flock raise wean then take the birds out....doesnt matter if they are weaned or 5 yrs or 15yrs old.
Then tame them down over a few days/week or take more time over a month, as per instruction in older threads....
See taming in the quick search block on the left.

I would strongly sugesst get familar with your birds raising and weaning before attempting to interfer with that process...get your learning/ observation in place 1st.

We have experimented with handling chicks ....susually this makes them real scatty to tame down later..so we prefer just let them be untill fully weaned.....If taming we let the parents wean rather than 'uncle' them out in the holding avairy.

Thanks! Wink

I think I will leave them until they are fully weaned and then remove and tame them, I dont want to upset the cycle, especially as they seem to be very good parents.

The nest box is attached to the wall and about 5ft above the ground so i will lower it on to a table in the next week or so to prevent a long fall to the ground when the chicks start learning to fly!

Luckily mom isnt too worried about me looking in the box, it's lovely to watch them grow and develop!!

I screw a bit of ply to the reat of the nesting box then screw that on the wodden wall where I want.
Top of our nesting boxes are ablot 5' from the ground, only to make it easy to screw up and look into.

Just before fully weaned about 2 weeks out of the nest, just as the iris starts to form...good time to start taming.
