the female is 2.5 years. the male is 1.5 years. im pretty sure they are opposite sex. they have a cockatiel nestbox. the female goes in often and rearranges the shavings, but has never laid eggs. they mate all the time, occasionally fight with each other. i have separated them in the past because of them fighting. but they have been getting along very well lately.
First of all, there's no harm in mating without anything happening, the worst that will happen is they will get LOTS of practice
Though kakariki are pretty easy to breed, their breeding habits can be unpredictable. Not all pairs are successful, just like with humans. Where some kakariki pairs only take weeks to reproduce, others take years or won't reproduce at all.
If you really want them to breed soon, you could try pairing them both up with another partner.
Meanwhile you can make sure they are in the perfect mood and condition to breed by giving them the best of the best.
Kakariki are omnivorous, that is, they eat both meat and vegetable foods. A varied diet should be offered, seed mixes, fruit, vegetables, and small amounts of chicken, and other meats.( mealworms, insects etc) Even a small piece of cheese now and then.
Make sure there is plenty of it and in a good variety.
Kakariki are very energetic birds.Make sure they have lots of space. The more the better.
They also love taking baths daily.
Giving them enough sleep and enough daylight hours is important as well.
Search the forum for ins and outs of nestingboxes. lots of info about sizes and materials there.
Have some patience. Provide them the right conditions and chances are you will have more chicks than you wished for.
If not this year, then maybe next year.
If not next year either, then maybe this just isn't the right pair to breed with.
Don't forget to enjoy those wonderful clowns... breeding or not breeding.
Gee
P.s please make sure they aren't hybrids. ( crosses between yellow- and redfronted)
one more thing that just came to my mind.. are the perches wide enough for the hen to get a good and stable grip?
If she's out of balance while mating chances are the " stuff that matters" ends up drifting in space.....
Diet from at least 3 months before breeding season and the perches are very important.
you can have kakariki breeding couple months of a diet a little negeted and infertite goes up, number eggs goes down very quick _________________ My Spelling is Not Incorrect...It's 'Creative'
