Hector is here to stay! He's been with us less than a week and already he and Milly are inseperable! They come out flying together and wherever Milly goes Hector will follow.. and when Milly goes in the cage so does Hector..
I think he thinks of her as his mum, he's only 7 weeks old and Milly seems to like him too. I really would recommend getting a kakariki a cockateil friend, I can believe how much they've bonded! They are NEVER apart more than a couple of minutes at a time, and Milly is so much friendlier now.
Hector gets to stay.. My daughter wouldnt even side with me to get rid of him when i offered her money! Oh well nepal here i come !
As some of you know I've just clipped Milly's wings (Milly is a young kakariki) but over the last few days she's been doing a wierd thing.
She sits on her perch, feathers puffed out, leaning forward, bum in the air, tail down so she's like an upside down V just beeping to herself quietly. I dont know if she's in pain, trying to lay an egg or what?
The noise she makes is like a constant, fast, quiet beep, beep, beep, beep, beep, beep for about 15 minutes/
I am worried that:
* She has gone insane because she's so upset about not being able to fly
* or she's trying to lay an egg (theres no nesting box)
* and / or she's in pain
Anyone's kakariki do that? And what the hell is she doing?
sounds like Milly is hoping that their is a male kakariki very nearby... I have 6 pet tiels, of the 6 only 1 is female and she is doing the exact same thing although whilst this is kinda cute - just watch that she doesn't become 'egg bound' if she is in fact trying to lay an egg but it sounds more like she wants something _________________ ~~INDI~~
Sassy,
Your Kakariki is not egg bound if she is crouching on the perch and calling softly. She is simply in breeding mode and inviting a mate. A hen who is egg bound will fluff up and sit very quietly.
It is normal behaviour for hens to go into breeding mode from about 4 months of age. It sounds like your cockatiel is too young to be a problem so I wouldn't worry too much.
Hens become egg bound if the egg inside has a soft shell or they have problems passing the egg naturally. Keeping up high levels of calcium will help prevent this. Calcium (in our experience) is best supplied either by sprinkling calcium powder onto their fruit and veg or alternatively by providing a calcium supplement in a seperate dish.
my kakariki does the exact same thing to. i was really worried in the beginning, and the vet told me shes doing a mating call. she's been doing it for a good few months now, she goes through spells of doing it.
sometimes she shuts her eyes and pushes herself into a perch hanging next to her aswell. it looks really uncomfortable!
we dont have a nest box either, and when she lays an egg, she crouches down in the corner of her cage for a little while, and if i walk past she'll raise her head to talk to me but she doesnt move.
