hi this is my first post so apologies if im posting in the wrong area or breaking any forum rules.. any help on this issue would be a great help and much appreciated,
Rico is only around 3 - 4 months old and has always been into nipping, but not aggressively! likes to bite people on the ear and ive no idea how to deal with this issue, he's well used to being out of his cage and around people.
Also in the last week he has started to get very protective over his cage and has charged at me once or twice when i attempt to put my hand in to change his food or water etc, has also been starting to show his aggression out side once or twice but hasnt in the last week or so.
I thought this nipping phase would pass as i thought he was just tasting and testing what was edible signlol id discourage him from biting my fingers by blowing in his face everytime he goes to bite, but now im lost, also i do have to chase him 9/10 times to get him back into his cage which obviously isnt good or proper order. this is only in the last 3-4 weeks, anytime before this everything was going fine. now i feel ive lost control.. this is also my first bird so please forgive my ignorance.
Thanks for any replys and advice, greatly appreciated :D Pray

This is Rico :)

When this 1st happens yes it is "is this eadable?" 1st few nips...
depending on the reaction here determines what happens in the future
If there is an exacessive pull back/ reaction it becomes "Hmm not edable but a damn good toy/game"

And from there things escualte.
What to do depends on how bad it has got...starting with a damn good growl and threaten to throw him in the pot thats boiling your breakfast eggs...and meant IT....who id the Alpha male , in control.
If it has progressed further than that, it means he gets hurt slightly more than he hurts others....again a measure of who is the alpha male. a good tap on the beak with your finger nail.

Upto more extreme, we had a suphur crested who got in the habit of nipping (damn good bite in kakariki level) and often draw a little blood.
So he would nip, I would pick up a wing and bit him back...
Problem solveed very quick....till tried other people where I would tell the to growl and mean it if he looked like doing it...yes he would 'try it on with new people, but eventually ran out of new people Wink

This behavour I encourage in parrots..it is their terrority, their bedroom, once they establish their safe place, they will poo before leaving it, go back in times of danger, and at dusk
Once this is well established u will notice if u put a new toy in, move stuff around, or remove something....he will go ape over it....compare if a strange, uninvited rearanged your bedroom and u had to just watch...

Our instincts of only pooing at a place we feel safe, protecting our terrority are no different to a parrots a lion or a dog.
The big difference is we identify these as human 'feelings' and the same thing in animals as instincts...our egos have a lot to answer for.

on the left is a "quick Search" block words like taming, terrorory, biting can be put in to learn a lot more and get others thoughts on the subjects.
