a neighbour gave me a huge amount of cuttlefish collected from our local beach,do you think its safe to use or stay with the shop stuff....think i may just ditchit better safe than sorry or ???
I dont know if cuttle fish go thru any proceesses before being sold
wash whatever...
Kakariki in the wild, those in bush and on islands have often been reported being observered diging amounst the kelp and seaweed on the beach, nibbling at fish and rocks etc..
My concern would primarly how healthy is whe beach/water at the beach the cuttle fish where collected from?
I would at least wash well and dry in the sun for a fee days. _________________ My Spelling is Not Incorrect...It's 'Creative'
Yes, I would do that too. Cuttlefishbones collected from the beach contain large amounts of salt. Put them one night in tap water so the salt can be removed.
I just dug this old thread up i remembered there had been some advice about how to clean collected cuttlefish bone....
I just bought 1k bag from ebay as my conures are eating loads of it (laying atm yay..!) it was being sold for bird use... but it definatley has the smell of the beach/sea on it...... as cuttlefish live in the sea... they all are going to have the same prob initially.... thinking it through... i considered that kakarikis live on islands and probably have salt intake to some degree and... that sea salt is not as strong as rock salt.... but i dont want to take any risks and the conures are putting away a heep of it atm (my local shop has run out)
id be really interested to know if anyone uses collected cuttlfish regularly and what prepairation is best..... is soaking enough?..... do they need to be boiled?... and does anyone know how they are prepaired commercially?
also...... what would excess salt do..... presumably kidney/heart/liver probs... but how much would cause a problem? _________________ May........
1st I would give a bit a very good lick..find out how salty
Peters washing above will certainly take a lot of salt out.
Our birds, burkes, turqs kakariki thru to kings and crimson wings all eat salted meats like ham, bacon scrapes and even some of the left over steak and chicken _________________ My Spelling is Not Incorrect...It's 'Creative'
hehehe@ good lick... our brains must work the same...!!! before reading your post i had a nibble of one id washed and it didnt tast of salt.... could tast the clorine from the water more...... so not so worried now....they taste pretty naff tho!!!
I did a bit of googling and discoverd some stuff that might be usefull to others too
there are 2 ways to obtain cuttlefish bone.....beach collected and as a waste product from prepairing the fish to eat....
there are 2 main concerns.... cleanlines and salt content
bones from caught fish for eating main concern is bacteria so wash well scrape a layer of bone off and bake dry/microwave to kill germs
bones collected from beach.... main concern salt content so soak over night and bake dry... boiling was surgested but also query about weather this would alter/destroy the calcium/minerals/trace elements in the bone
although some people say they just wash them off and feed them its better to be safe than sorry.
maybe i over worry about salt.... when i firt got my birds i read a lot and read somewhere that salt is really bad for birds ...and you shouldnt give them crisps salted peanuts or even peanut butter as it has salt in... _________________ May........

yes I would be very concerned about heat changing the calcuim structure...
And if it has had a high salt content...salt is a preservitive..ie faish ham etc...and salt does this simply by dehydrating the bactia cells, and they die.
Therefore bactica is not an issue
And you would be very suprised how effective urban tap water is in sterisation of even dirty hands, untensiles etc.
So I realy dont see any need other than a good wash off with treated tape water to reduce the salt content IF its is an issue in the 1st place....
Our cuttle fish in the avairies is just thrown into the seed bucket/tray, and yeah gets dug out, throwm around the floors, in the mud after big storms...the same mud the birds are going to digg in.
Personally I think the people who come up with all these things are the same people who get sucked into the marketing BS of sterization of everything from childrens pencils to speacial wipes after they have had an icecream...
Or put more simply paranioa. _________________ My Spelling is Not Incorrect...It's 'Creative'

then they wonder why superbugs appear and the kids grow up with poor imune systems _________________ May........
Bit of a side note...I donate blood platelets...these are the part of the blood that stops infections, helps healing clotting etc....
These days only 1 in 10 blood donner have high enough plateelet counts to donate...
Add to that one can donate every 2 weeks and takes about 2 1/2 hours.
It is used for serious accident victums , kids with lukemia and related stuff.
A comment made by several nurses, and including Sth Afican..off shore ones....the ave platelet count has dropped noticanlely over the yrs.
I sliced from just above the top of my little finger nail, to above my top knucle, from the side, flipping the whole aera open with my caving knife on Xmas eve...
I simply laid the skin back, a parrifin gause over and wraped sticking plaster around and carried on.
Re dress a few day later, removed the dressing 7 days latter...and rem I have been in the compost gardening cleaning avairies water blasted the whole house...
All heald up nps.
What really annoyed me is I was called in on Boxing day to donate, and because of the wound they reconed I need my plattetts to heal me. _________________ My Spelling is Not Incorrect...It's 'Creative'
