I just saw on the Kiwi bird New Zealand website that someone can adopt a red-crowned kakariki. What do you think about it? I would like to get involved in protection of wild kakariki and also education even if I'm from another country? Is there any other official action in NZ like that?

I really hate to be cynical or negative....
After yrs of studing, experimenting and producing over 1000 heathy pure breed adults, then having to chop their heads off when Dept of Conservation, or any conservation project could have had them for free, I have be come cynical.
Also when I have come across endangered repitle breeders, native ducks, insects, and the same frustrating law applies to them..
One has to conclude those animals at major risk, justifies huge budgets for research and recovery on a very expensive scale to the tax payer.
Those species that are only endangered, not at risk, are left to become at risk, like kakariki, (DoC arguement for more conservation money)...to justfy further funding.
Yes Im saying DoC lets endangered become at risk endangered...

Millions of sponsered money....take advantage of that "PC armchair feel good emotion" are squandered on bloated 'recovery projects that reasult in a hand full of birds a yr.
We have the federation of birds clubs in NZ...many with decades of hands on experiance (but not PhD), whos members are willing to step up to the plate like most kakariki /repitle breeders in NZ and mass produce these endangered species for a few bags of seed or free.

Do you think I would "sponser a Kiwi" or endangered bird under these circumstances?

I have gone to Several Ministers, Several Prime Ministers, Several PMs, The opposition, several, Green peace, Forest and bird, consevartion organisations, in NZ and internationally, Even to local Editorial programs like Campbell live, 20/20, Closeup to name a few.

This is part of what this site is about....

And is this a NZ issue? no it is an international issue, the same beurocratic self sustaining policies happen to be in many counties around the world.

Heaven forbid that a Government Conservation Dept actually obsoletes its self or at lease a section of itself...That is the ultimate indication they hare doing something sucessful.
Now go find somewhere in the world it has happened.

It happens also here in Spain. There are species that are endangered or critically endangered and authorities instead of promoting responsible breeding go for the easy option: "forbidden".

I'm pretty sure, as Steps says, if you approach a couple of breeders and ask them to keep 2-3 pairs of certain fringilids and donate the offspring for repopulation they will be enormously happy.

But that's a lot of work for them, lots of more paperwork, etc... and mostly... the chance of something going wrong. Most high-profile government employees only want to keep out of trouble by all means. Be it if they work at the sea harbor, the airport, the zoo, etc... doesn't matter. Their nr. 1 priority is not to get into trouble.
