We have one pair of red fronted kakarikis (a pied male and a cinnamon female) who we just recently put together in the same flight. The hen is a Jan. 2011 hatch and the male is about a year or two older; the hen had her wings clipped seriously and was very timid when we got her, so she had her own space until she grew her flight feathers back and we were certain she had a big enough personality to stand up to the male. A year later, her feathers FINALLY came in and we put them together, and within a month or so they started breeding. Since she started laying eggs in various parts of the cage we went ahead and gave her a nest box, in which there are currently 4 eggs (the oldest 2 of which candled fertile yesterday). We breed Gouldian finches so we have experience with breeding birds, but have no clue about how long the eggs take to hatch, whether we should be supplementing the parents' diets further (I read somewhere that meal worms are a good idea? They currently get Higgins small parrot seed [same size that our parrotlets get... think it's also cockatiel sized] fruity nibbles, Pro-Teen egg food, Herb Salad, crushed eggshell, cuttle bone, as well as fruits and veggies several times per week.)
I noticed the hen laid an egg about every 2 days, and started sitting very soon after the first or second one was laid. I assume this means that the babies will hatch at different times, which is unlike our Gouldians. I also read that babies who are handled at fledging can be as tame as hand raised babies... is this commonly accepted as true?
Any other information would be greatly appreciated! _________________ Rachel and Alex

you will need 2 nest boxes, yes a balanced, considant and varied diet is needed.
you will find the scarapes from you own meal preparation will supply most , and left over meat scrapes diced up the iron and protein
On the left is a "quick search" block where one can search for things like nesting boxes, diet etc
The best thread..pages long, is called "what do you feed..." _________________ My Spelling is Not Incorrect...It's 'Creative'
