So whats the gist with releases?
I am just being curious, i think that it would benefit wild populations and bring them back locally, but then on the otherhand i understand that we only have one chance to get this right.
Any one know any more about the contraceptive for possums?
If they get that right who knows what will happen!
Flocks of birds
Some of the answers are sort of covered in couple other threads....
I think what the problem is getting pure bred species back into the wild is a must.
We have to take into a/c that nearly all the stock in NZ is sitting in private avairys.. over the last 50 to 100 yrs there has been cross breeding, in breeding, and its only the last 10 to 20yrs or so that pure breeding has come to the forefront.
Personally I question as to whether much of the so called 'pure ' stock is pure.
I see some of the pics in the gallery (wish there where more members with albums), See reds for sale in retail outlets and other capitive Kikes.
They all have yellow spots or faint yellow tinge and or spots around the red crown, the chest also has a yellow tinge more like our yellows. I cannot garantee the 100% purity of our stock of reds, but they do not have ANY yellow spots or tinge.
In the links section off the main page, theirs is more info on what releases have been made and where the stock came from. _________________ My Spelling is Not Incorrect...It's 'Creative'
As far as i know my kakariki are not crosses.
The red carries on to behind the eyes
They do have a little yellow on their bodies but thats not near their heads.
I will have to try getting some pics on here but i need to get round to actually getting some good pics.
I had a look at the links, did you mean on the DOC site?
No the threads in this section.....
From my understanding DoC is concerned about putting pure bred back into the wild, rodents, stoats, possums etc....
Its been an on going issue since 1923 from what I can see.
The Minister of Conservation does accept that there are private individuals that have a greater expertise in holding Kakariki in captivity and in Sept 2003 released a policy for specific giudlines for permits and best options for long term options to be approached. Implimentation of these new poilicies will occur thru the devalopement of new technical guidle lines.
It is now Nov 2004, I do not know where or at what stage these guidelines are at. _________________ My Spelling is Not Incorrect...It's 'Creative'

How did kakariki die so suddenley in the wild?!?!
As far as i know kakariki dont do any thing different from say rosellas, and they still seem to thrive!
My own personal belief is that they could not stand the new diseases that were introduced with all the new birds that were brought here.
But now the remaning ones have the resistance but not the numbers in the wild to make up for the losses by predation, its like in auckland how that idiot released thos ausse birds, they were in a big flock so they would have done quite well but good ol doc is good for something!
So a localised population with high density would have a much better chance than the few and far between that exist somewhere!
If only doc were more trusting
well thats my view, please feel free to critisise, correct, decimate but dont expect me to change my mind that easily! :P :P :P
