Hi All!

My name is Dolly and I own a Kakariki named Buddy. He came to us about 2 months ago. We purchased him from a person who was selling them from his home at a yard sale. I live in Cambridge, Ontario, Canada. My Buddy is very active, just like the websites I have read have said about Kak's. I would like to know if any other Kakariki owners have heard their Kak's talk. I am trying to teach mine to talk but he is only uttering Peeps! So far Buddy is giving me hours of enjoyment. I have read that their are other Kakariki owners in Ontario. I would like to correspond with them if they have some time in the future.

I believe Kikes can talk...in saying that I know of 1 person personally who has had a male that was handreared by them and did talk.
I have 'heard' of others, but being rather a sceptic at heart, in most issues unlees I actually see, or reproduce my self, or the personal report is by someone I know personally, of very high integrety (as the pewople above) I remain rather sceptical.
I used to have a Sulphur Crested yrs ago, who talked, understood etc etc.
3 things I say to ppl who want to have a parrot who talks

1/ Are u 100% sure that u want and cabn give such a pet the attention/devotion it needs for the next 10 to 15 yrs plus. Or just a wimiscal dream.
2/ U own a dog or cat? So when u come home from work, do u really want the animal say "hello"..."feed me"..."what are u doing"..."take me for a walk" etc etc".......think about it!!!
3/And after all that...DONT teach it to swear!!! WHEN u need to pass the bird on in 5 , 10 or even 20 yrs time NO ONE will want it.

I have a friend with a hand reared male kakariki that is in an aviary breeding at the moment. His name is Ricki and he says "Hullo Ricki Rick" quite clearly. My daughter loves this. In my opinion the clarity is similiar to that of an Indian Ringneck i.e. much better than a cockatiel or budgie but not near as good as the known talking parrots (Amazons, Greys, Macaws, Cockatoos etc.)

My friend says that it is quite easy for a woman (higher pitch than a man) to teach the males a few words but don't expect too much.

Thank you both for your advise on the subject of speaking Kakarikis. I don't know if Buddy will ever utter a word, but I will keep trying!

. I am new at the bird breeding and I was under the impression that the Kakariki were isolated to NZ. It's interesting to see that they are bred all over the world.

On the subject of teaching birds to talk, I know that our (indoor hand reared) Ring Neck has picked up things that we weren't teaching him... (amongst other things) he loves to call the one cat that he torments, calls my daughters name, laughs like my wife and when asked who is a pretty boy, he sometimes mentions my name... Shocked

Yet he still continues to ignore our repeated attempts for "home" and "thank you". We also discovered the female Ring Neck that he shares his indoor aviary with, can wave at us when she wants our attention...

We are hoping to get into actively breeding Kike's (as I sense they are also called) in the new year.... this year we're watching our outdoor Aviary Ring Necks and Quails... Wink
