Hi All
I'm a little concerned that in the last couple of days when he's out of cage he flies around a while and then keeps going on top of cage and starts nibbling at his feet-not pulling hard-just nibbling mainly in between his toes but I can't see anything wrong--is he just cleaning or is there a problem. I hope there's nothing wrong--any advice very w3c.
He seems fine but this morning he was only out for an hour then he went back in and usually he stays out for approx three hours.
Thanks in advance for any help.

This is the only site I trust for advice, I have been to every site on the net and there is so much conflicting advice, on this site you all really care about your birds that is obvious so your advice is trustworthy--I want the best for my bird.

Patti,

I am glad you have found our site so informative. I replied to your original email on the Yahoo group and suggested you try this site so I am especially satisfied that it has been helpful. Now in answer to your question.

It is quite common for Kakariki to clean their feet. This is due to the fact that they hold food with their toes and it is just general hygiene to keep themselves clean. All of our birds do it on a regular basis.

Birds are similar to humans in many ways and as such can have an off day every now and then. Your Kakariki might be feeling a bit tired and prefer the solitude of his cage rather than the open spaces. You will find that as he becomes more acustomed to his surroundings he will decide how long he wants to be out of his cage. It is nothing to worry about at this time.
