Hygiene a subject that hasn't realy come up in the forums...And was pointed out by Apocrypha not long ago.
Attached below are 2 documents, From DoC and I think Auckland Zoo, both go into great detail on procedures etc and are a little over board for the small private breeder/bird keeper...but certainly illustrate practises at the high end...

1st off I'm going to have a bit of a bitch here
I have seen others aviaries/cages etc, including public and private Zoos.
I don't like some of what I have seen.
Sure an Avaiy maybe old, needs a coat of paint, that does not mean the birds are not looked after, so if you have an old aviary I'm not bitching at you.
Its where birds are kept in open to wind/rain dirty, ill fed, boring conditions.
Flights cages that haven't been cleaned out for months even years, mice and vermin running around quite freely. No attempt what so ever to control them...excuse TIME then in the next breath its something like "I love my birds"!!
Well in my books, LOVE is a verb, a 'doing word' its measured on actions not words, ant that goes for everything, be it a car, friend or family.

SOME SIMPLE HYGIENE PROCEDURES

1/Fresh water every day, containers cleaned at least once a week
2/Fresh veggie material every day, any build up of old material (more than 1/2 cup) cleaned out at least once a week
3/Maintain supply of cuttle fish, minerals etc
3/separate Footware for each aviary (we use thongs or jandles)
4/Flights cleaned out of droppings, any build up scraped up at least every week to 10 days
5/Vermin traps in most flights, regular trapping poisoning program outside aviaries.
6/Storage of food the same as one would with their own food.
7/Nesting boxes kept clean and sterile when reissued. (we use an LPG torch to scorch the wood)
8/regular testing for worms (instructions for this is in forums) and dosing when required.

With a little thought, and hints in these forums 1 to 5 is a simple, once a week job, taking just under 1 hr for 9 flights and 30 to 40 birds.
These are basic routines and I find NO excuse for ppl not caring them out!
Usually they are ppl who don't know 'how to work hard at being lazy' (think about that... a weekend putting in automatic watering, saves a lot of work later)
Your birds are Reliant on YOU for their well being, if you cant do it, take up knitting.
We come across ppl who say its cruel to keep birds, 9 times out of 10 its because these ppl have also seen bad maintenance, and under those circumstances I have to agree with them. Those who cant care or love their birds give the rest of us a bad name.

The above routines are no ware compete
And I hope other members add their ideas thoughts hints etc in posts for promotion of good care
Steps.

Sad

I'd have to agree on this forum. I've since discovered in keeping birds that they need to be like an extension to your kids. I'd would never let my kids sit in their own mess so why let the birds do it for longer than necessary!! It takes me 45 minutes to clean out my birds cage. I do this twice a week but it's worth it as they look thrilled to have a clean cage. I do infortunately have friends who don't clean out their birds so often. Maybe left for weeks at a time and it's terrible. I always find that cleaning out the cage gives the birds that extra fly time. I have mine in my living room in a cage that is ample big enough for both of them but I like them to spend as much time out of it as they can. I'm pleased that a large majority of people who keep birds take pride in them having a clean cage!!!!

We have 3 aviaries/ 8 to 10 flights. Total just uder 35 m sq floor space.
We rake pumice sand and clean out any debris, scrape off any build up on perchs/fittings/rocks, scrub out all dishes and water bowls, fresh water, check nests, and replace any pumice sand that needs it, replenish seed /veggie supplies, Dismantle clean and sterilise any nesting boxes that need it.
Every 7 to 9 days
Time 45 mins to 1hr max

If we have Birds in the inside hospital cage, that takes 4 to 10 mins to clean and replenish suppies every 2 to 4 days.

Going on the above.
There is no excuse for poor conditions or failling to take responsiblity for the living creatures in ones care.

Regular maint means less work. That how to be truely lazy.
Or as my Dad used to say..."work hard at being lazy"

I disagree, majority yes, not large majority. Too many are rip roar and bust for the 1st 3, 6 or even 12 months...after that they dont have the self disipline, true love of their Birds, and become irresponsable.
If these birds where a dog, cat, horse or a cow...these ppl WOULD BE PROSOCUTED.
