Hi,
I know this is a Kakariki site, I am wondering if anyone can direct me to a good detailed site or person/group about Kea breeding, diet and housing?
I am a student at Auckland Uniec researching for a project on Kea.
Thankyou, J.

I know this is a Kakariki site,

No problems m8...
Check out the Mt Bruce site in the Conservation Block on the left.
As far as I know There is no private breeding of Keas in NZ, and I dont think DoC would even consider it. Thu their are many private Zoos that do exibit Kea.
As far as finding a site like this for Kea Im 99% sure there is not one.
I have done a lot of searching over the last 6 months or so...to exchange links, info as with the NZ brown teal.
As far as housing goes Kea need a huge high aviary, the framing and netting, very heavy...far more than most large parrots as in like Sulphur Crested, Galah.
Kea are extremly strong and intellegent, it only takes a few to very quickly strip a car of all its rubber seal, mirrors, badges, wind sheild wipers, and body trim, including modern bumpers.

They do it because they are super smart and need to entertain themselves. They have done experiments to test their intelligence and they used methods that the scientists didn't even consider. They are probably up there with Crows and African Grey Parrots on the intelligence level. Are they kept overseas?

Wow - the bird equivalent of the bears that rip into people's vehicles at some campsites here in the U.S. (IF you're silly enough to leave any food inside).

I haven't heard of anyone keeping these as pets in the U.S. Not sure if any zoos have them.

the bird equivalent of the bears

That sort of sums up the unqueness of NZ native wildlfe.
Because we dont have native mammals (other than a small bat) our birds etc have evolved in many ways to to step into the 'voids' that mammals would normally filled in the balance of nature.
Unfortunately many of these are now extinct due to them being prone to introduced mammals including man.
The size of some of these birds (moa, eagle) was huge, and many others became flightless..like the Kiwi and kakaopo parrot.

You could say something unique about most of our endemic species. Few examples below;

Kiwi - well have a look at one and you tell me Laughing . There are five species.
Takahe - largest rail. 200-300 of them left.
Kakapo - Largest parrot and the only flightless one. They use their wings like a parachaut. Only 86 of them left.
Kea - only mountain parrot.
Kokako - unique member of a family only found in NZ-Callaeidae. NZ's version of a squiral.
Tieke - its in the same family as the Kokako.
Whio - NZ's torrent duck. It has no close relatives. Only lives in fast flowing rivers.
Hihi - Found to be the sole member of a unique family.
Xenicidae - These little dudes are super cool.

They are the only super unique ones I can think of. They are just the birds though. I haven't included the Tuatara and the weta etc.

It saddens me to see the way the planet is changing.
In my humble opinion, everything is suffering because a few groups of humans decided to depart from the hunter/gatherer/farming lifestyle and drag the rest of the world with them with technological 'advances' (or kill them off to get what they want). I suppose that the planet has seen many extinctions since it's beginning, and will eventually witness man as one on the long list...Hopefully before we completely decimate the ozone layer, causing Earth to resemble Mars. Give an idiot enough rope, and they'll hang themselves. Can't get much more positive than that, eh? hit the fan

In NZ the "hunter/gatherer/farming lifestyle" laid bare far more land and made extinct far more species with Stone age tools than the group of the "technological 'advances' " that has a popualtion many times the size and who introduced into that enviroment 'pests' that are quite devitanting.
There has is far more restoration and progress being made to return much of it back and save far more species by that latter.
In this modern PC world so much of reality has been lost in the false glamourisation of pre Industrial Revolution populations.
This does not mean we should not learn from these times..classic illustration is the maintaince and sustanablity practices of forrests in europe passed down over generations father to son.

The Māori were not conservationists they were opportunists. Every group of people that is hungry will find the most easiest prey first. Most of NZ's flightless birds were killed out in the most accessible areas. Maybe they were developing conservation techniques when Europeans came. You just need to look at how many Kereru are being poached in Northland to prove they are not conservationists but you won't hear them admiting that.

My post was sligtly off-topic, I guess, because I was talking about the whole planet. Hunter/gatherer/farmers didn't possess the technology to destroy the ozone layer and spew radiation and toxic chemicals into the system.

I'd love to know of one group/goverment that hasn't acted out of greed at some point in their existance, to the detriment of other life, human or otherwise. If the Maori knowingly caused the extinction of species in NZ, I belive they're typically human, but the technology they posessed couldn't have had the global impact that the advances we've made since industrialization.

Anyway, it's just as futile for me to wish we never posessed the technology to screw up our whole planet, as it is for me to hope that humans will stop acting out of greed without regard to the consequences.

Yes they did, and its the same technology used for 1000s of years and the same technolgy used today on what remains of the great rainforests

Fire...Bloody big uncontrolled ones
