The Kakapo would have to be my dream parrot...
The ulimate in intellgence, charactor ...of any bird
And there is no need to clip its wings, it is flightless...

My 2 dreams a 69 Genine matching number Yenko Camaro and a Kakapo
1 is over $1Mil US , the other hardly exists .
Shocked

Hey Steps,

for less than 1/4 of $ million you can have a brand new sports car with better performance and more bells and whistles than an old Camaro, and save the other 3/4 for parties.
(Yes, I know, I'm young and stupid) :fun: hit the fan

Regarding parrots... kakapo is indeed an interesting bird. It's really extravagant in almost any aspect. Its lifestyle, mating parade, longevity, etc...
It's such a pity that they took so long to take "hands on" action to guarantee its survival. Now it's gonna be a slow recovery, apparently they take a long time to become fertile (5 to 9 years as per this website) and they don't breed every year (although it's my idea that maybe they could try triggering it making extra food available).

Did you ever think of or attempted keeping kea or kaka? I don't remember if you told me about this before.
They have to be really amusing to keep. At least kea is reported to have an excellent intelligence. Here in Europe they are available but price is high. 5-8000 Euro.
Kaka, I don't know if they are kept in captivity, but they are less known nevertheless.

Regards / Pablo

The Kakapo is truely a remarkable bird.

There is a recent YouTube clip of Sirocco mating with a zoologist Shocked
http://tvnz.co.nz/national-news/kakapo-caught-mating-zoologist-s-head-3048203

There is only a slight opportunity for private people to keep Kea in New Zealand, less chance for Kaka and no chance for Kakapo.

Lets hope they retain the right for us to keep Kakariki.

Yep, but unless one is a regist, zoo its not even worth fighting the beuocracy just to get no where...
The same goes for any other NZ native, except red and yellow kakariki.
Fantail, Tui, Weka, etc etc would all makew great avaiary or cage birds.

Keas as a house parrot...with in minutes, the will have destoyed everything. But do make great outside pets...ie just let thenm roam the backyard...(if the camaro isnt parked outside.)

Re Camaro..

Think you better look up performance of the Yenko m8...
OH and our 40yr old 3.7 L Carburated V8 camaro has better performance that most modern cars, including the new Dodge and Mustang, and about the same as the new Camaro, and better economy and emissions than a small V6...Also it lasts longer because it is made to last, and doesnt depreciate... over 500% in under 30yrs appreciation isnt bad...and parts maintaince is less and cheaper by far than any modern car...
....and when you drive them...there is no need to have to prove anything to anyone...it turns more heads than any jappa , or euro sports car, and thats a comment from my Sons who are into things like RX7 etc.
"(Yes, I know, I'm young and stupid) "
Im in an agreeable mood this morning Whistle

Hey Stumbler,

thx for the info. I was just wondering.

By the way... did you ever think of keeping them or tried to start the process?

I said I'm young and stupid, not a saddist!

I meant simply as aviary bird :) they must be really funny birds to keep, both kea and kaka, from the little I know about them.

It's such a pity that they don't rely a bit more on private breeders. It's really funny because there's people keeping all kinds of pigeons, touracos, etc... all over the world, which in essence aren't really that different to those NZ species you mentioned.
Orange fronts... same thing.

In the end, you are just a handful of breeders with a permit, they have been supervising you for years, you have a spotless record, etc... They know you do the right stuff.

Kakapo is really special, maybe a private breeder is not optimal for such a bird. But Kea and Kaka... they are hardy, can and will eat anything, etc... I see them (from the little I know) as easy to keep as most large parrots like large macaws, cockatoos, you just need a kea-proof aviary :) Anxious

Regards / Pablo

lmao

Supervise? hell DoC doesnt have the manpower nor in most cases the knowledge to do so...

lmao

Over the yrs, like many ppl with avairies, they need to be closed down on conditions, general care, health, hybrids etc.

DoC called for submissions late last yrs, part of my submission was to have volunteer inspectors, who would admin the permits, inspect, follow up inspections...4 guys I know, all members here, and all knowledgable enough and their own pratices in keeping birds upto scratch, would cover most of the Nth Island and top and bottom parts of the Sth Island
