I am 17, and got a pair of beautiful Kakarikis from a Pet Shop...
They are kept in quite a big cage, but recentely I have noticed that I actually probably have one male and one female (they couldn't be sexed at the time of purchase) as one keeps mounting on the other, and the female makes a sort of mating call?
If they are mating and it is successful I am quite worried, as I don't know what should be in the cage in case she does lay eggs, what the babies need etc. as I am a total novice and this is my first bird! I have been trawling through websites but I just can't find the right information...
you can usually tell the sex of a kakariki by size, the male is slightly bigger and also has a bigger beak, if they are under 12 months i should not encorage them to breed as this can cause complications such as egg binding in females [which means she will not be able to pass the egg and if its not caught early enough could be fatal] the eggs might not be fertile[eggs will not have chicks inside] etc if however they are over 12 months it should be ok for them to breed you can tell if there mating the male will mount the female he will tuck his tail under hers so there vents meet [private parts ] and move around till the act is complete and about 7 days later she will lay a egg if the mating has been succsesful if you want them to breed provide them with a nest box but only if your sure as kakarikis can have as many as 9 eggs sometimes even more give the hen lots of extra calcium such as cuttle fish, greenfoods, eggs, oranges, etc the birds will feed the chicks also you will have to find good homes for the chicks after
i hope this helps char

Oh dear breeding sounds scary And Yes, my yellow Kakariki (Tutti) is quite bigger and brighter than my green Kakariki (Fruity)... I'm quite worried now! Maybe there is noting in it as they are only 10 weeks old?
hello char look in kakariki general then under sexing kakarikis there are pics in there that will give you an idea whether you have male or female. I have just be given a male bird but the other two are females and i have had these for 4 months, they have since i have had them tried to mate with each other so just because one is climbing on top of the other doesn't mean they are male and female.
i dont belive how close u r!! i am also from perry barr just of church road/perry villa drive wot road u on? if they r 10 weeks and are still mating i should seperate them for a while although im not sure if they would be sexually mature yet i think they can start breeding from about 4-5 months but they should not be allowed untill at least 12 months have you got any other pets? wot pet shop did you use? do they sell parrots in there im looking for a blue and gold macaw
I live on Blakeland road... It's just off Kingstanding Road...
I got my Kakarikis from Pets at Home in West Brom! I don't know bout Macaws tho, they don't have them there... there is a pet shop in Erdington but they only have African Greys
