1st u have to make sure that u own or have permission to use the pic.

To download a pic right clk/save picture, choose location and save
To edit pic :
1/open in a picuture editor, (ACDCee , photoshop etc)
2/ Choose crop and choose the area of the pic that has the subject u want, taking out unwanted background
3/ Choose resize and make the longest side no greatwe than 95 pixels
4/ save as/ name.jpg , there is an opition button, here set to about 18%. Save
5/uploads in your ptoflie to the server.

The above is basically the same as when adding pics to posts/gallery, except the total size is about 500x ...

It's an animated pic, if I save it to my computer, then it's not animated? I'll pop the link on, so you can see what I mean http://bestsmileys.com/animals/7.gif

The blunt answer is NO

I will explain
Every page is downloaded thru the net, sort of like downloading a big file.
The size of each thing from letters in posts to avatars, smilies, the liitle envalope pic by "email webmaster" at your right top, pics in threads, all add to the size AND speed at with it downloads and appears on your screen.
Hence, there are limits set in the coding of the site as to how big (kbs) avatars, pics ppl upload.
This is done 2 ways
Pics in gallery, and posts when uploaded the server automatically resized and reduces these with a built in pic editor that parameters we preset as Admins
Avatars and sigs also have a limit set but dont have a pic editor, these must be within the correct size for the server to accept. And will not accept animated gifs over this size

Some of these animated gifs will not down load as animated, because the code that hosts the gif, is designed to protect copyrighted material.
